The project's exploration work began in the 1950s, and has been operating since the discovery of the Oyut deposit in 2001, the Hugo Dummet deposit in 2002, and the Heruga deposit in 2007-2009. On October 6, 2009, the shareholders of the Oyu Tolgoi project signed an Investment Agreement, and "Erdenes Mongolia" LLC, THR Oyu Tolgoi Ltd., formerly known as Ivanhoe Oyu Tolgoi, Oyu Tolgoi Netherlands B.V., and Oyu Tolgoi LLC are the shareholders. signed a contract.
From the Oyu Tolgoi project, in 2022, 34% of the government's share loan /$2,363 million / has been canceled, and taxes totaling $2,829 million have been collected in the budget of Mongolia in 2010-2023. Oyu Tolgoi project started ore processing in January 2013 and has the capacity to process more than 40 tons of ore per year. From the beginning of processing, 412.73 million tons of ore was processed in the first half of 2013-2024, and 7,919.58 thousand tons of concentrate was produced during the same period.
From the total investment of $14.3 billion in 2010-2023, $6.9 billion was spent on underground mine development, $1.3 billion was spent on underground mine current investment, $6.1 billion was spent on operating investment, and $3.1 billion was capitized as loan interest. As of June 2024, the construction process of the underground mine is 95% complete, and it is planned to be fully completed in December 2025.
