Ceres and ITM - 2 Completely Different Technologies21 Mar 2025 11:05
Ceres’ focus is on solid oxide fuel cell ("SOFC") and solid oxide electrolyser cell ("SOEC").
Bosch have ceased development of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) as it focuses efforts of PEM-based hydrogen production technologies.
Dr. Thomas Pauer, President of Bosch Power Solutions, said market volatility has forced the company to consolidate its efforts and focus the portfolio.
“We see hydrogen as an important source of energy for decarbonising the energy system.
“For the green production of hydrogen, large numbers of electrolysis plants with high-performance stacks will have to be set up worldwide. And it is on those opportunities that we will focus,” he said.
PEM Electrolysers are the future for Green Hydrogen and with that in mind Bosch had planned to launch its first PEM electrolyser stack later this year.
🟦 **Solid Oxide Electrolyzers (SOEC):**
SOECs are recognized for their high efficiency and ability to utilize external heat sources, which can significantly boost their electrical performance. Their dual-functionality as fuel cells adds versatility. However, challenges such as high operating temperatures that lead to system aging, degradation and the need for external compression lead to higher maintenance and service costs.
🟦 **Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) Electrolyzers:**
PEM systems are excellent for their compact designs and high power densities, making them well-suited for integration with renewable energy sources. Their rapid cold-start capabilities allow for quick adjustments to changing energy inputs.
