Hydrogen production

Scotland’s has a huge renewable energy resource, in particular from onshore and offshore wind. This creates massive potential for the early deployment of large-scale hydrogen production. 

With one of Europe’s largest Offshore Renewable Energy Zones and powerful wind speeds, we already have an enormous project pipeline for both onshore and offshore wind.

The recent ScotWind leasing round will add 28 gigawatts (GW) of new offshore wind capacity. The INTOG leasing round will add a further 5.5GW. Our total energy pipeline could exceed 50GW, which would enable a huge scaleup of electrolytic hydrogen production over the next decade. 

The size of the electrolytic hydrogen market in Scotland was recently estimated to be 126 terawatt hours (TWh) of renewable hydrogen production. With this capacity, Scotland could be a key exporter of green energy to Europe.

Cummins and its technology partners have completed a major hydrogen internal combustion engine (H2-ICE) development project for commercial vehicles. The project, known as ‘Project Brunel,’ was led by Cummins in collaboration with Johnson Matthey, PHINIA, and Zircotec, with match-funding from the UK government and support from the Advanced Propulsion Centre UK (APC).

To put it into perspective, this find represents about half of the world’s annual production of gray hydrogen. While it’s a great find it’s not the silver bullet.

Experts at GeoRessources and the CNRS are investigating how to safely extract and store natural hydrogen.

The sustainability of these underground reservoirs is also a critical question—scientists want to ensure that these reserves can be used efficiently without depleting them too quickly. This is in the very early stages with many more questions needing to be answered & understood.

Hyundai Motor will begin the construction of a hydrogen fuel cell plant at its Ulsan, South Korea, facility this year, with mass production targeted for 2028.

Set to be its third fuel cell manufacturing plant, the facility will reportedly be capable of producing systems for up to 6,500 hydrogen-powered cars per year.

Hyundai’s fuel cells for passenger vehicles (Nexo), buses, Xcient trucks and its new SUV are currently produced at its Guangzhou facility in China, with an annual capacity of up to 6,500 units, and at its fuel cell factory in Chungju, South Korea, which can manufacture 23,000 units per year.

The Ulsan fuel cell plant has been introduced under Hyundai’s strategy to expand hydrogen consumption to three million tonnes per year by 2035, in line with the global decarbonisation shift.

The race is on to produce Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles, Hyundai, Honda and Toyota expanding production capacity!

BMW confirms mass production of hydrogen car and accelerates the hydrogen future! 💧🌍

At this week’s Hydrogen Media Day, BMW Group reaffirmed its commitment to hydrogen mobility and decarbonization. A major milestone: Dr. Michael Rath confirmed that BMW will launch its first mass-produced hydrogen vehicle in 2028! After successfully testing a pilot fleet of less than 100 iX5 Hydrogen vehicles worldwide, the company is now preparing for full-scale production, making hydrogen a key pillar of its future mobility strategy.

But BMW’s hydrogen ambitions go beyond passenger cars:

✅ Hydrogen-Powered Logistics: As part of the H2Haul project, BMW has acquired two zero-emission fuel cell trucks to test hydrogen’s potential in freight transport. These trucks will operate in Germany between Leipzig, Landsberg, and Nuremberg

The commitment is clear for Green Hydrogen and £2.3Billion will go along way. Lots to look forward to!
