RE: Minto mine production22 Jun 2018 00:23
Lazygun: the tonnage dropped for a variety of reasons, they spent time and money stripping surface waste, secondly I read somewhere in the CPR published today that there were issues with the ?ventilation leading to some part of operations stopping-could be mistaken, thirdly the grade has varied, recovery has varied given ore was mix of oxides and sulfides.
Going forwards, David explained that the company’s focus is not necessarily to merely increase headline tonnage processed, it is to improve metrics such as recovery percentage, grade of concentrate, AISC etc. This thinking would explain why they shut down open pit mining, despite capstone having stripped huge areas, just months ago. It saves in costs what it loses in copper I guess. So they may well produce less overall tonnage this year (at least looks that way to me until Sept 2018), but the recovery and hence grade/quality of concentrate will be excellent (I m told the recovery from the sulfides ore can be as high as 97%). Contrast that recovery with oxides which are allegedly in the 70s.
In any case, there is a nice graph of production month wise from now for next few years, colour coded by area of ore. It clearly shows a ramp up of (ore) tonnage from Sept 18 onwards. All just my two pence observations, happy to be corrected. DYOR. Good luck all
