For anyone who watched the BBC2 Horizon program last night on vaccine development the Australian vaccine that had SARS-CoV-2 spike protein stabilised with a fragment of HIV protein was, I though anyway, quite interesting. Common sense would dictate that putting a ‘bit’ of HIV into the body was a bad idea, and so it turned out as the body developed antibodies against the HIV ‘bit’ which led to problems with diagnostics – development was ceased.
We haven’t yet got Affimers trialled in the human body (unless AffyXell are on with it?), but we did demonstrate the potential of Affimers to ‘neutralise’ the virus by binding to the spike protein over a year ago.

So was just wondering what the opportunity might be to substitute the HIV protein used in the Australian vaccine with a suitable Affimer?

It should be apparent and no surprise that there are a majority of US companies providing tests in the US – Abbott, Quidel, Becton Dickinson, to name a few.
The point being that Innova are only small players in the US market. The situation is similarly reflected in Europe, i.e. national governments have supported their domestic Diagnostics businesses. So it’s notable that there is one country, a G7 country even (well, one that I know of), whose government signed up for some Chinese ‘product’, when domestic supply could have been rapidly facilitated with the right support, now which country’s government would be so incompetent?
