The plastics industry is helping in the fight against this deadly virus.

For twenty years Symphony Environmental’s public health division has been researching and developing low-cost ways to make plastic hostile to dangerous micro-organisms such as bacteria, fungi, and viruses, by incorporating a special masterbatch in the manufacture of the plastic products.

The active ingredient in one of Symphony’s d2p masterbatches is known to be effective against viruses of the Coronavirus type.

The active ingredient can also be incorporated into face-masks, aprons, gloves, overshoes, overalls etc.

These viruses can travel through the air and adhere to the surfaces of desks, counters, walls, kitchen worktops, chopping-boards, trays, and thousands of everyday products made from plastic, from which they can then transfer on contact to human beings.

Novacyt claim their coronavirus test is faster than rival methods by focusing on a narrow sequence of DNA coding. To assess whether a patient is infected, laboratories screen DNA under a method known as generation sequencing. The samples are large and require lengthy review. The test kit is to be sold for up to £5 per unit and would be produced in Britain. Currently to assess whether a patient is infected. Current testing takes between six hours to a day. The second methodology, which is what Novacyt is using, is where they look at a much narrower set of sequence associated with the specific strain of coronavirus. Novacyt says its test is quicker but also more cost effective because it can be used on various testing platforms. The test has not received regulatory approval but Novacyt hopes to receive a green light from the European Union next week and has applied to the United States’ Food and Drug administration for emergency use.

Early Detection
One of the trickiest things about the coronavirus is its speculated transmission by asymptomatic patients. This increases the number of infections and makes containment measures less effective, spreading fears that the virus may establish a permanent presence in some areas. There are also fears that many incidents lie undetected, spreading the virus under the radar. As of March 9, the virus has infected more than 110,000 people, killing nearly 4,000, in 97 countries.

Several biotech companies have scrambled to provide kits and resources for early and reliable detection of the new coronavirus. Mammoth Bioscience, a San Francisco-based startup, is already working on a detection assay using their CRISPR technology. The DNA technology companies IDT and Genscript already distribute PCR-based kits for detection for research purposes. The Chinese companies BGI and Liferiver Biotech use the same PCR technology for the kits they provide to their countries health authorities.

The French-British biotech Novacyt announced the launch of a diagnostic kit for clinical use in middle February. The kit will also use quantitative-PCR, developed by their sister company Primerdesign. Its high specificity will reduce the analysis time to less than two hours. The company’s CEO Graham Mullis told Reuters that each kit will cost around $6.50, and that they have already received more than 33,000 orders.

Asian stocks mount a recovery while Dow futures jump 800 points

New York/Hong Kong (CNN Business)Markets in Asia Pacific began to recover Tuesday, and US stock futures jumped more than 800 points a day after novel coronavirus fears and an oil price war sparked a worldwide panic.

Australia's S&P/ASX 200 closed up 3.1%, the index's best day since November 2016. The strong showing saved the index from entering into a bear market, defined as a 20% drop below a recent high.
For a time, Australia's benchmark was the only major index in Asia Pacific that was trading firmly in the green as stocks struggled to find direction early in the day. But by early afternoon, Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index (HSI) was up nearly 2%, finding some stability after swinging between gains and losses. China's Shanghai Composite (SHCOMP) was up 1.9%. South Korea's Kospi (KOSPI) was 0.3% higher.
Japan's Nikkei 225 (N225) increased 1.2%, recovering from earlier losses. The government there is expected to soon announce more emergency measures to contain the spread of the virus. Japanese companies are also feeling the pain from the toll the virus took on China last month: Nissan's vehicle sales in China dropped 80% in February compared to a year earlier.

US oil futures were last up about 7.6% to $33.48 a barrel, while the global benchmark Brent crude rose 7.9% to $37.08 a barrel.

Health Ministry considers placing all Israeli travelers in quarantine

A representative for the Ministry of Health is recommending that every Israeli returning from abroad be put into quarantine for 14 days, according to a report by Channel 13.
On Sunday, Dr. Orly Weinstein, a Health Ministry official, said she expected that the coronavirus will infect as many as 60% of Israelis: "We are talking about tens of thousands of patients."She noted that most people who are infected with the virus will have mild or no symptoms, yet she still recommended that to curtail its spread all Israelis returning to the country from outside be put into quarantine.

Novacyt Products Pass Regulatory Muster in US, China

NEW YORK (360Dx) – Novacyt today announced regulatory actions by US and Chinese regulators for two of its products.

In the US, the firm has registered its Novaprep HQ+ Orange vial as a class I device with the US Food and Drug Administration. Providers who can qualify the vial for cytology or molecular use in the US can now purchase the product. Novacyt plans to seek a commercialization partner for the Novaprep vial and media system, the company said.

Novacyt also said that the Novaprep system has been approved by the Chinese Food and Drug Administration for non-gynecological cancer testing in China. The technology was previously approved in 2015 by CFDA for cervical cancer screening. The new approval means Novacyt can market the Novaprep system other cancers through its China subsidiary.

"These regulatory approvals expand the marketing and distribution opportunities for the Novaprep platform in cervical cancer screening, which is the largest, and in certain markets, one of the fastest growing cancer screening markets," Novacyt Group CEO Graham Mullis said in a statement. "The additional non-gynecological approval in China for Novaprep brings the technology to multiple new cancer markets and reinforces our direct sales investment in China, which is already giving substantial growth of 100 percent in 2016 and is expected to deliver more in 2017."
