An incisive, eloquent, and yes, sobering summary.
In my humble opinion, all this negotiation is unnecessary. On the 24 June 2016, all that was necessary was a brief message from number 10 to the EU saying we are leaving in March 2019. Well pay our subs until then, and then they will stop, so youd better use the time to plan for a 17% hole in your budget.
Of course, we will still wish to buy and sell from each other. If you want a sensible arrangement, well let you know precisely what will be acceptable to us. Until then, here is the bill for the squandered contributions the U.K. has been making these past 40 years for the EU to distribute to uncompetitive industries, largely in France, Spain, Italy and the recently joined net benefactors. By the way, we also own a share in the 1bn plus EU property portfolio, built / purchased wholly by U.K., French and German money. Well have that back too. I could go on.
Some wags have pondered on Trumps approach to dealing with Brexit as our PM. We would not be getting shafted by our own incompetence and grovelling approach, which has promised wedges of taxpayers money with nothing in return.
I can only hope our civil servants will save the day.
