However remember that the market maker holds a quantity of shares to maintain liquidity in the market. If the spread rises they generally are struggling to aquire shares and a rise in share price may occur after a wide spread, but not always.

If only slightly more than the market makers holding is changing hands then it is fairly price neutral, a couple of percent up or down.
