Grant Shaps Statement8 May 2021 11:55
Amidst all the things I did this week I made three decisions that stand out and were absolutely the right thing to do and done ahead of GS's statement and on the PM's vibes prior.
The first was to rearrange my holiday flights from last year that were already rescheduled to this summer and to switch them again to next August. I just foresaw Europe not going to be opening up as expected and in any case had no wish to fly into countries with higher risk, where I might have to wear a mask in searing heat, and where I would also have to pay for Covid19 tests to travel. Add in now also stated airport delays as well which the Border Force Chief candidly admitted.
The second and allied to that was to take profits on travel stocks. Why on earth they rose last week after the PM's comments and forewarning of cautiousness I have absolutely no idea.
Thirdly I booked a staycation which coincides with some good film releases for evening entertainment purposes.
Having watched Grant Shapps announcement it was I have to say a really poor and ultra cautious statement from the Minister and with limited countries of appeal. No Greece, No Canary Islands, No Malta, No Cyprus - 4 that the press had you believing were likely. I think so poor was the content that those invested in the travel industry may now belatedly re-evaluate their positions and switch into other sectors that might benefit more from people deciding to stay at home and that are scheduled for reopening. Admittedly the traffic light system for travel is subject to 3 weekly reviews but the almost instant doubling of flight prices in some cases immediately after the announcement will also only serve as a big deterrent for others in the future. The same will undoubtedly happen with any new countries added to the green list.
The upshot is imho is that it has handed us a further good reopening opportunity in the |UK immediately after the 17th May and already pent up demand. GS's announcement will have put paid to many end of May / June half term foreign holiday plans. Stay at home or stay cation therefore. Disney's Cruella newly released (28th May) and Peter Rabbit 2 just recently released might end up being beneficiaries in trying to keep children entertained during the holidays.
All eyes on Monday now for the next stage of the UK Road Map and what that may look like.
