PETITION RESPONSE TIME29 Oct 2019 15:21
Since the petition reached over 10,000 signatures I thought I would be useful to find out how long it normally takes the Government to reply. This is the response from petition committee:
Dear...
Thank you very much for your message.
Usually, it tends to take Government departments about twenty-one days to give a written response to a petition.
We count this from the day on which we (the staff supporting the Petition Committee) notified the relevant Government department that the petition had reached 10,000 signatures. This means that, if the petition reached 10,000 signatures over a weekend or late at night, we may not count this from the precise day on which the petition gathered the required 10,000 signatures.
Sometimes, a Government department can take a bit longer than this. There might be several reasons for this. For example, the petition might be on a complex topic, so the Government department may need to take longer to research and write their response.
I hope that this helps with your question. Please let us know if we can do anything more for you. We’re always very happy to talk about petitions.
Kindest regards,
Petitions Committee, House of Commons
