John Lewis has failed because shops are full of franchises, cut back on stationery, haberdashery, material so no point going there for something you actually need so suckers miss out on temptation of all the other departments , own label goods have become dross if not rubbish, , so M&S has a gap to exploit with high street presence. Furnishings and furniture… have a 15 y’old M&S bed which is exceptional quality, rather buy M&S own brand linens etc and other home wares, than John Lewis, ditto in woollen goods , menswear good quality for price, children stuff always good, and on trend, fortunately out of that demographic now, although never liked their shoes etc and particularly hate the vegan leather trend…it’s bloody plastic. Also good they have taken up Jaeger. So yes I think they are going the right way, just could improve shop interiors….touch of the ASDA?! and stop closing branches.
