Technically the war has been going on at some level for years, hugely escalated now, and Putin does seem to have a habit of getting involved in long conflicts. But is that the point, is it not more about when things reach an acceptable level for monetary systems to be reinstated to keep Western economies afloat (will be put forward as now we've taught you a lesson). The probable winners of the next election in Italy are hinting they will make some kind of break with sanctions if they win, they may be lying, but it reflects popular opinion; many economies are looking at recession, this can tip into market jitters / big downturns and governments are well aware of that. With the open disapproval of China and India, and Russian state media looking to blame generals and intelligence, it looks like Putin is aware of the huge hole he has dug and has an eye on his own survival.
