No it was for the setting up of a new Ireland and UK.food safety and animal health single market. That's even worse and has no chance. If Ireland became part of that either 1. Ireland would leave the EU single market for food and livestock or 2. The UK would have to stay in the common market for food. Not going to happen.

Looking at what's going on in London it occurred to me that Johnson might go down in history as the first PM never to win a Commons vote.
He needs to find a subject quick that isn't Brexit.

Nothing is impossible I suppose but I'd be surprised is they offered that for 4 reasons

1. The food sector is by far the biggest import export business sector between the UK and Ireland. They might as well go with the original May deal as that.

2. The size of that sector for irish exports to the uk
Is Irelands weak point so if the UK give in on that they would be giving up what they see as their trump card.

3. Ireland cannot negotiate. If they intend to offer something that big they would need talk to the EU first.

4. Food is incredibly regulated so there would be several EU laws that the UK would need to retain.
That might hinder this big deal the UK and the US plan.

All the other bits may be true because they are in the hands of the English side. With the last bit you end right back where we are now. Even after a hard Brexit the Government will still have to deal with the EU's 3 demands BEFORE trade talks begin

Because of the numbers now in the house of commons the DUP are basically irrelevant. I have heard a couple of interviews over the last couple of weeks discussing an island of ireland border as was in the original WA before May yielded to Foster. I think that might now become the best option to break the deadlock. Delete the DUP stipulation and revert back to the original WA agreement.

There's a picture online of Teresa May been driven away after tonight's vote. I have never seen her look so relaxed and happy. Nothing to do with her old friend making history as the first PM to loose their first vote I'm sure.

Its not that long ago that a British PM losing a H of C vote would have been unheard of. now a PM actually winning a vote is unheard of. In the next day or so we will see a minority government actually loose a vote for a general election to put itself out of its misery as the opposition vote against it. Who would think that even possible. To some extent democracy has been restored inspite of the government but what a mess.

brexit is not the only issue affecting Birg. A lot of companies and governments all over the place have borrowed in dollars. Investors have invested in Dollars because of the better returns in the states. Now with the dollar gaining value repaying the debts is a lot more expensive than expected at the same time as the trade war hits economies. Hard to believe but the EU is not far from another round of QE. that is going to destroy banking yeilds and could even end up with banks been nationalised. In the US they have been doing the opposite to QE (taking $ out of the system) which is leading to a dollar shortage. They will need to print again next year as well. For now Long Dollar and Long Gold is what I personally see as the best trades ( if trading is you thing). Just my opinion. I am not an economist.

I have to say it's fascinating watching whats going on in the UK and to be honest I would be fearful of what's it's actually going to do to itself. All the talk has been of financial issues but it's going to take a long time for a political recovery no matter what happens now. Johnson could out Trump Trump shortly. Trump would love to be able to shut up the Senate, deselect any R that votes against him and if all else fails just ignore the Houses decisions. How far are we away from Farage as PM? If the EU wanted this to go bad for the UK to deter any other member from leaving it got it in spades.
