Consensus of opinion is that a 25bp rate cut is already 'priced in' by mrkts. Ahead of Powell's remarks CME Groups FedWatch Tool indicates a 75% chance of a 25bp rate cut and a 25% chance of a 50bp

when Powell addresses investors later today.

On Wall stocks came under early pressure after an early 136 point rise. Stocks turned down throughout the day closing just off low 40,584 for the session. The 30 big board saw only 9 gains headed by JPMC and AMEX while MSOFT, AMAZON & INTEL led the laggards.

A senior longtime Tesla VP has quit the company after 11 years of service. She follows 6 others who have already departed which leaves just one other woman at VP level in the company. Stock fell $13 to $211.

Crude oil ($77) saw a sustained increase in prices after lagging for the last 5 days. Gold dropped more than 1% pressured by dollar bounce back, profit taking and rising bond yields. This morning Gold ($2494) has resumed its upward path but traders see solid resistance at $2600.

All 4 major US indexes closed modestly higher on the day. With no compelling reason to do anything investors and traders sat on the sidelines.

Most expect the Fed to cut in September despite a steep downgrade to 2•9m payroll adds originally reported as 818,000 suggesting the softening in the labour mrkt could be more pronounced than previously assumed.

Shares of listed companies Target and TJX gained on back of strong revenues and forecasts while Macys ($15) fell after lowering its sales forecasts having previously turned down a $6•9bn buyout offer.

JD.com fell after Walmart ($75) sold its stake in the Chinese e-commerce giant for c.$4bn ending 8 years of partnership between the 2 companies amid a challenging landscape for China's economy. Walmart has decided to go it alone in China.

Asian mrkts are trading mostly lower this morning after negative cues from global mrkts overnight. Some weak holders were cashing in their chips awaiting news from Jackson Hole and will the cut be 25 or 50 basis.

On Wall the major averages ended the day well off their worst levels but still in the red column as most traders sat the day out staring at flat lining screens. Crude oil settled lower for the 3rd straight session on concerns China demand was easing and worries a ME settlement was as far off as ever.

Gold set a record intra day high of $2570 in early deals as Chinese traders rush to buy gold in anticipation of dollar weakness and gold becoming the preferred instrument for individual savings among Chinese citizens due to property sector woes, sparked by the Evergrande crisis where excessive borrowing and over building led to its downfall.

In an effort to revive the sector the Chinese Central Bank has earmarked $45bn in cheap loans to banks and other entities to purchase unsold properties to get the log jam moving again.

Big tech drove the mrkt higher yesterday as the 500 rallied for its 8th straight day, now within 1% of its all-time high after falling 10% earlier this month. The 500 gained 54 points and the Dow added 237 where 25 of the top 30 led by Intel, Big Mac and Disney all closed better.

Nvidia ($130) was the strongest force among Nsdq stocks and has now surpassed Microsoft ($422) as the world's 2nd most valuable Co by mrkt cap. The stock has climbed 30% this month increasing its value by $700bn to $3•197tn. Apple retains its top dog status at $3•434tn.

In other tech news AMD said it would buy ZT Systems in a cash and stock deal worth $4•9bn. AMD gained $7 to $155. AMD is ranked no 42/3100 in the league of world's largest public companies valued at $251bn.

The mrkt was also bouyed by reports that Goldman Sachs has lowered the odds of a US recession in the next 12 months to 20% following the latest jobless claims and retail sales nos. Adding to the good news sentiment the CBOE volatility index (fear gauge) fell from a 4 year high to rest near the all time low price of 11.

Morning all.

Asia opened a new week on a mixed note though Tokyo saw profit taking from the bell and at mid session was down near 400 points snapping an 8 session winning streak. Major exporters bucked the down trend with gains in Sony, Panasonic and Canon. As the days close neared the 225 was off 680 points.

In Sydney the ASX200 which has been struggling below the 8000 level for most of the year is slightly higher extending a 6 session winning streak as gold rose amid spiking yellow metal prices pushing up Newmont and Northern Star.

Gold opened lower and trades around the $2500 level though dealers see prices rising on safe haven and ME tensions.

Elsewhere across Asia Hong Kong and Shanghai are modestly better on local factors with Pacifica's trading flat to marginally better.

Morning all.

MSi dividend of 16•5p is paid to holders on the register this Friday the 23rd August. Depending on your holding holders might be wary of reinvesting the div in the stock given the drop in the sp last week. Before you decide check trade deals & vols i reported yesterday.

Buys and sells cancelled themselves out over the week so it was more a jobber inspired drop than bearish investors dumping at any price. Trying to shake out loose holders and stale bulls didn't succeed.

I shall certainly look to add more if the stock heads sub 900 anytime soon. Record profits and we're at near 52wk lows makes little sense to me tbough i get at this time of the year prices drift. The vacuum in newsflow will be filled by sellers hoping contracts have dried up or cancelled and going short is an easy way to make money. As Clint Eastwood who once famously said " Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk? Might be a pointer!

Those of a different opinion will see this as an opportunity to invest despite being unsure the board intend to remain controlling shareholders. I feel sure they most certainly will as the upside for the Co is a lot brighter than the sp indicates and why quit when the Co has so many new avenues and opportunities to grow the business?

At the very worst, MSi is a hold even though some now see the Co as a 'has been' by the likes of Simply Wall St, Market Beat etc who have 'sell' & 'overvalued' recommends on the stock . They have their agendas (ie not invested with their hard cash) so happy to dole out controversial opinions at zero cost. We can all do that.

Among the 11 major sectors of the S&P, financials enjoyed the bigest % gain while industrials suffered the largest drop as US stocks ended higher on Friday extending the bigest weekly % gains of the year as worries of an economic downturn eased.

No doubt the star of the week was Gold ($2508) hitting an all-time record on Friday chalking up a 38% gain since October last. Historically there's a strong correlation between US Govt debt and gold prices. During the period US national debt has ballooned from $5tn to $35tn. Gold has risen 8x since 2000 and if history repeats itself Gold could reach $5000 when Govt debt hits $70tn.

The 500 and Nsdq notched their 7th straight session of gains where not too long ago the Nsdq had entered correction territory. The Dow gained 96 to close at 40,660 (up 1162 points on the week) with 22 stocks of the 30 ending better led by Boeing, Cisco & McDonald's. Heading down Caterpillar, Msoft & Amgen.

Global central Bank officials will speak at the symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming next week with Powell's key note speech on Friday potentially setting expectations for a 25 bp rate cut. Maintaining restrictive policy longer than necessary is not the way forward.

Morning all.

Take into account the 'dog days' of August and the Summer doldrums if your worried by the slide in the share price which affects most mrkts during the quiet summer months. Whatever the shares slipped to a 2 month low and down 70 on the week.

If your a first time investor in MSi at anywhere near current sp, it might be worth a 'toe in water' check while others are looking elsewhere? I have picked up a few more in the hope the board are not going to report any sp moving data which will leave me stranded lower down the totem poll.

Frustrating for sure but it's what it is and sooner or later Michael Bell Snr may decide to hang up his boots and go lie on a desert island.....

.........don't hold your breath Yorkshire'men are contrary folk to say the least and tend to hold their ground. I'm sure you all know the risk/reward associated here which might disappoint given the lack of current news and the outlook in the near term.

A top German Bank has hailed the UK stock market's remarkable performance and backed the 'best of British' shares to pull further ahead of European rivals in the months ahead.

Official figs yesterday added to the cheer as they revealed the economy grew by 0•6% in Q2. Experts at Deutche Bank now tip the Ftse 100 to outpace European rivals in Q2 & Q3 this year.

The ftse 100 is not only cheap relative to the rest of Europe but also to its own history. They see the UK economy in good shape and growing faster than others in the G7] group of nations. It has undermined claims by the Labour Government that they inherited the worst economic circumstances since the Second World War.

Critics expressed incredulity at the Chancellors claim coming as she has been doling out huge pay settlements (at twice the rate of inflation) to public sector workers at the expense of hard pushed pensioners and insisting of a £22bn black hole in the nations finances.

After 6 weeks in power its clear the private sector will be paying for the Chancellor's largesse as latest to cash in are the train drivers getting a 14% rise backdated of course for up to 2 years with gold plated pension rights on salaries of £70,000 a year on average.

I wonder who else will be paying as this Govt fleeces

anyone who tries to improve the lot of their children?

Wall St rallied to one of its best days of the year after data showed the economy is holding up better than most forecast thanx in part to the US consumer spending more in the shops despite higher prices.

The Dow has almost recovered losses from the flash crash of early August rose 554 to 40,563 still short of its best ever close of 41,198. The more inclusive S&P gained 88 for its 4th best day of the year ending short of its 52wk record (5670). The Nsdq climbed 467 to (19,490) still well below its record high of (20,675) set earlier this year.

Several big companies report topping forecasts. Walmart beat analysts estimates for profits and revenues and raised its forecast for the full year, shares put on $5 to $73 for a 38% gain this year. Deere & Co the seller of Bull Dozers and heavy machinery added $22 to $373 in a challenging environment where 3Q sales and net income were lower. The company has underperformed rivals Caterpillar & GE this past year with the stock down 7% to date.

Cisco rose $3 to $48 topping forecasts and will cut 7% of its workforce as it shifts its focus to growing areas of Ai technology and Ulta Beauty ($365) jumped 11% after Berkshire Hathaway reported a stake in the retailer. The companies stock has fallen from $567 in the face of stiff competition in the beauty space from Walmart & Amazon.

On a generally uneventful day stocks moved higher as prospects for a rate cut of at least 25bp is now almost a racing certainty. Labour Dept data showed US consumer prices rose 0•2% in July taking the headline rate to 2•9% y-o-y, below economists expectations of 3%.

On markets 7/11 S&P sectors traded higher with info tech and financials leading the way. Both the 500 & Nsdq clocked their 4th straight day of gains thanks to a rebound in megacap and tech stocks. On the big board the Dow added 243 crossing 40,000 as 24 of the 30 posted gains led up by Amex, Home Depot & GS. Going down Caterpillar, Intel and Merck & Co.

Late on Kellanova rose 8% to $80 after family owned confectionary giant Mars said it would buy the Cheez-it, Pringles and Corn Flakes maker in a $36bn all cash deal. Assuming the deal passes regulatory approval the merger would seem to be a perfect fit of two complementary businesses.

Top stock Google ($161) dropped 4% after a media report said the US Justice Dept is considering options that inc breaking up the online search engine a week after a Judge ruled the tech giant illegally monopolised the on line search mrkt. Twenty years ago Washington failed to break up Microsoft on similar grounds.

18 months ago a Bank of America report labelled the UK stock mrkt the dogs of Europe. Fast forward to now and London is the top choice among European investors which is a major vote of confidence in the country even if UK investors don't believe it.

The shift in sentiment comes as political turmoil in France and recession fears in Germany where optimism over a recovery has completely evaporated outweigh fears that the UK has deep-seated economic drawbacks not least a work shy population (various categories) of 9•4m

adults neither in a job or looking for one.

No doubt those looking from afar see attractions in the cheapness of UK stocks and how much latent growth remains available if Starmer can get to grips with the 'sick man of Europe tag.'

The BOA survey found the share of investors planning to be 'overweight' in UK equities over the next 12 months jumped to more than net 30% this month from less than 10% in July. With many fearfull US equities are still overvalued albeit mostly limited to the big tech outfits calls for cuts in rates by 50bp are becoming more strident.

Mind you MSi could do with a boost as well!

Outside of the stock market news yesterday which was at best mixed to uneventful, Trump's much delayed TV interview ended hours late due to tech issues.

Musk who has endorsed Trump (he backed Biden in 2020) blamed the difficulties on a server which was flooded with traffic in an attempt to shut it down.

During the lengthy 2 hours conversation Trump congratulated Musk on the nos of people trying to tune in, a counter on X showed as many as 1•3m were listening.

The chat offered Trump the chance to air his usual mix of grievances, personal attacks and overstated claims.

For instance he said the price of bacon had risen 4 times this year and other countries were sending their criminals to the US both inaccurate assertions. A long standing critic of electric vehicles he has shifted gears calling the electric cars made by Tesla as "incredible."

The talk was Trump's latest effort to seize the spotlight from Kamala Harris whom he insulted several times calling her "third rate" "incompetent" and a "radical left" lunatic whose 11th hour entry has galvanised her party and sees her ahead of Trump in some key states. He claimed Harris swapped in for Biden was a deliberate coup to stop bumbling Joe from tanking the Democrats election hopes.

Why Trump continues praising Putin, Xi Jinping Ping and Kim Jong Un as "at the top of their game" is a mystery to most Anericans and a whopping own goal. The former President sounded at times as if he had a lisp something many viewers on X noted. Trump campaign management did not respond to a request for comment.

A holiday in Japan for Mountain Day has removed one source of volatility as shares in Asia and Australia edge higher this morning. All eyes will be on US CPI nos, retail sales and annual inflation data released this week. Housing stats and industrial output are also on the weeks agenda.

The futures mrkt prices a 49% chance of a 50 basis rate cut in September. Wall ended Friday on a steadier note with 3/4 major indexes gaining. Albeit over the week the 500 fell 3 points the Dow lost 239 & the techs added 72.

A cautious start to wk 33 is predicted due to the nos of important economic data being released which will inc China figs on retail sales and industrial production due Thursday which are expected to show the economy continuing to underperform.

Gold ($2424) held steady and is expected to consolidate this week. Oil put on 3•5% on fears of a widening ME conflict impacting supplies as war chants in Iran threaten a large scale attack on Israel. US Defence Secretary Austin has ordered the deployment of a nuclear powered missile submarine to the region.

Wk 32 saw a big increase in volumes and bargains dealt, in fact double last weeks. Shares closed unchanged at 1060 having hit a wks low of 980. There was no material news to move the sp since the Agm on July 25th when the shares hit an intra-day high of 1160.

Wall St enjoyed its best day in nearly 2 years recovering losses during the recent sell off sparked by recessionary talk. The S&P gained 120, the Nsdq put on 546 as big tech ran into buyers but the Dow stood out rising 683 to 39446. All 30 Dow blue chips rose on the day led up by Intel, Boeing and Salesforce.

Noted gainers included Eli Lilly up 10% on earnings and profit beats. The company raised its full year guidance due to strong demand for it's diabetes treatment drug Mounjaro and obesity drug Zepbound. Broadcom and Nvidia were chased higher adding 6% with Meta up 4% and Apple close behind gaining 2%.

New data released on Thursday reassured investors of the labour mrkts stability as initial claims fell to 233,000 from 250,000 the wk before.

The US economy is in much better health than Wall credits by adding on average 215,000 jobs each month over the past year. An economy in recession rarely adds jobs as consistently as this.

US markets closed in the red yesterday as stocks came under selling pressure particularly the Dow which traded in a 715 point range closing at the low for the day at (38,763) down 234.

Nvidia ($98) one of Wall's most influential companies went from a morning gain of 4% to a 5% loss as its share price shot too high amid Wall's frenzy around Ai technology.

Despite recent weakness in its share price down from $134 the stock is still up 105% this year.

A profit report from Super Micro Computer which sells storage and computer systems used in Ai fell short of analysts expectations tumbled $137 to close at $480. This impacted broader tech majors, Msoft & Google. Apple bucked the trend putting on $3 to $210 up 13% ytd and regained the top spot in most valuable global company stakes from Microsoft.

Weak earning nos cont to trickle in, Warner Bros slid 11% on poor 2Q profits and a $9•1bn write down on its TV networks. Disney fell to $85 after warning of slowing demand in its theme parks which contribute 70% of Disney's profits. Bigest loser on the day was Bumble ($5•60) the on line dating platform which plummeted 30% after it cut its annual revenue forecast.
