The 3 major US indexes closed moderately higher in thin trading awaiting Israel's response to Iran's 200 missile attack on Tuesday. While Netanyahu considers the 'Samson' retaliatory option as opposed to striking Irans oil installations, Biden has urged him to respond proportionally by foregoing the nuclear route.
On Wall news that US firms added 143,000 (99,000) new jobs in the private sector a good deal more than forecast, thanks in the main to the manufacturing sector adding staff for the first time since April had no effect on mrkts preoccupied with the ME crisis.
The Dow gained 40 points as 16 of the 30 constituents fell on the day led down by Intel, Merck and Nike. Going up United Health, Salesforce & Amex. Nvidia ($121) rose 1•6% helping to lift the tech index but Tesla ($248) fell 4% after the electric vehicle maker reported 3Q deliveries below estimates. JPMC ($207) and other banks will kick off the 3Q earnings season on Oct 11. Vols on US exchanges were a below average 11•18bn traded.
Meanwhile the Dock Strike at 14 major ports, the first one in 50 years entered its 2nd day and is said to be costing the economy $5bn a day as 45,000 dockhands go on indefinite strike. As the impact of the stoppage spreads, 100,000 workers could be laid off. Biden has the power to suspend the strike for 80 days while negotiations take place but is not planning to act.
