The Dow bounds ever higher up 544 at mid session tracking advances in the East, Europe & London which surged 230 on the 'what lockdown' day.
US investors ignored preconceived ideas about a Socialist leaning Govt and piled into economy linked stocks. Banks hit a 12 month high tracking a sharp rise in the 10ytb (1•054%), GS jumped $14 to $285, JPMC up $6 to $132 & Amex added $5 ($124) while the Energy sector cont yesterday's strong run gaining c.5%, Chevron up $3 to $90 and WTI $50•85.
Big techs Apple ($128) & Msoft ($214) were early losers as investors rotate out of stretched tech values into battered covid stocks. Airlines were chased higher, Spirit +4%, Southwest 3% & Boeing caught the eye up $6 ($215). Cruises reflecting weak bookings were little changed.
Not so Elon Musk the gravity defying wunderkid benefitted from a Morgan Stanley note who lifted their price target to $810. Fundamentals mean little to Tesla Fandoms, metrics like the stock trades on 15xEV/sales, stratospheric pe/r blah blah blah..., its the story you buy into nothing else. Early deals were done at $759 and towards close had powered up to $772 later trimmed to $763 on 44•4m deals.
At the other end of the Tesla graph Barclays Motor analysts have Musk at a target price of $230.
News from Georgia has one seat going 'Blue' and the other odds on to turn giving Joe a clean sweep in Washington. Late on in the session the Dow crossed 31,000 for the first time ever, the last 1000 point rise taking just 21 days.
Gains were pared when an unruly mob of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol building seeking to undo his election loss. One woman was killed by an unknown shooter when she gained entry to the building. The National Guard was called out as other cities saw similar protests.
On the NYSE 16•6bn shares were traded risers on a 1•72:1 ratio with 89 new 52s no new lows on the 500.
