Investors ignored Trumps hissy fit of threatening to veto the stimulus bill and decided to buy stocks on the back of better jobless numbers which surprisingly fell last week.
Investors are caught between the immediate worrying prospects for the economy and longer-term when the outlook is much better. Meanwhile getting money into the hands of cash strapped citizens should bridge that gap.
Early moves on the Dow saw the 30 at 30,250 by 10:00am with 9/11 SP500 sectors ahead. The NSDQ Composite was lower due to sellers in big techs and investors rotating out of high priced electronics into the value end of the market where less pricey cyclicals abound. American & United Airlines up 2% & 3% as they plan to bring back furloughed staff this month. Cruise stocks were on buy lists Carnival up 6% on hopes of holiday makers leaving Port for the Summer season. Bookings are reportedly healthy.
Stocks in focus saw Drug maker Pfizer ($37) rise 2% after signing a deal with Uncle Sam to provide 100m additional doses of their vaccine by July. Merck ($80) up $1 announced its own brand of covid treatment was under FDA review. Moderna put on $4 to $124 and Novavax jumped $12 to $128 rallying off a 5 day $110 low.
Electric Truck maker Nikola slumped 11% to $15 after calling off a deal to supply 2500 Electric Garbage Trucks to waste disposal firm Republic Services. The 'other electric' firm stopped the rot rising $5 to $646 as Musk revealed he tried to sell Tesla to Apple for 1/10th the current value but Tim Cook blanked him. That must go down as one of the biggest clangers in financial history, a $560bn booboo! Akin to the guy at Decca when offered the Beatles said "No, they'll never make it."
Index Tracker funds have been busy in Tesla buying an estimated $90bn worth of stock for their investors. After hours Tesla slipped to $642 on 32m traded for 3/3 on the downside since joining the top table.
On the NYSE 12•2bn shares were traded buys outpacing sells by 2•83:1, 33 new 52s, no lows.
