The Streets 4 main indexes closed at record highs on Thursday as optimism that the stimulus bill was said to be in the final stages of agreement and would be rubber stamped galvanised buyers. The Dow up from the bell traded in a narrow 170 range all session and closed just off its 30,324 high.
Modernas stock got a shot in the arm when a panel of 20 experts agreed to submit for emergency approval its vaccine to the FDA for immediate roll out. Already Canada, UK, Japan, S.Korea & Switzerland have ordered Modernas vaccine (95% effective for over 18s/2 jabs required) & can be stored at household fridge temperatures (-20C) unlike Pfizers which needs (-70C). Moderna will have 6m doses ready by the weekend, stock rose 3% to $140. Cost is not known but $30 a shot has been mentioned. India has 2 vaccines in final stage and is expected to be priced at $3 a jab, if not free for the vast majority.
The other big event today will see Teslas stock rating being decided. The SP 500 is a weighted index by mrkt cap and Teslas free float is $490bn giving it a 1•5% weighting, superseding Berkshire Hathaway (1•4%) as the largest in the 500. Teslas rating was upgraded by S&P Global to (BB) from (BB-) as the companies increasing liquidity has reduced its financial risk.
Shares rose 4% to $648 with the market.
Co results were thin on the ground Accenture boosted the 500 by beating Q4 revs and upped guidance, shares up $18 to $264. Topping the big board, J&J, Home Depot, Nike & Visa, down among the losers Boeing ($221) which has hired 160 pilots to smooth the return of the Max Jet, Intel, Chevron & JPMC. On the NYSE 10•5bn shares were traded advances beating decliners by 2•2:1, 39 new highs no new lows.
