MSCIs broad index of Asia-Pacific shares fell after hitting record peaks last week. Japan's Nikeei slumped 230 at open on news that several European countries had closed their borders to UK traffic as a new mutation of the virus had been detected.
News out of Beijing that China threatens to impose counter measures after Washington blacklisted 60 Chinese companies weighed on markets though Shanghai bucked the down trend. Crude fell 3% on the virus news and border closures.

News from the US that Congress had agreed a package of measures to support American families and businesses was overshadowed by the virus news. New outbreaks have been seen in Thailand & Australia and stricter lockdowns re-imposed in Tokyo. In Singapore you can be fined $10,000 for not wearing a mask outdoors.
EIA report crude inventories on Wed. The jobless and income data will also be out as mrkts are closed / half day on Thursday.

Final few days of 2020 which started brightly for Palm companies until the deadly virus turned from a ' little local'
difficulty into a wide-screen pandemic that spread unhindered across the globe.
Infections, deaths, economies, life styles were all impacted in never before seen ways to our lives. Nine months on we are back to square one fighting a 3rd wave and a new mutation of the virus. We can but hope the two vaccines on roll out will stem the spread next year.

Commodity prices have recovered from the lows of March as China fought and defeated the virus. Their improving economy boosted sentiment and stock markets in the Far East and America and 2021 will hinge on the success of inoculations, the US economy recovering and Biden settling differences with China. Despite covid wrecking millions of lives, global equity mrkts had an astonishing year confounding every necromancer on the planet. Remember the Dow at 15,000 and a second great depression was about to befall the World?

We have six and a half trading days left and these will be more book squaring than opening new positions. After the New Year we may see equities cont to move upwards as long as we get good virus news. Last January (see below) global equity mrkts had a rocky start.

Here's hoping 2021 will see the virus defeated as far as possible and REA is valued at a sensible price. It looks like my 75 year end sp was too optimistic! Think I'll give up trying to forecast the unknowable!

Intraday record busting continued as the Dow rose 40 to 30,343 before wiser heads prevailed due to the stimulus bill remaining locked away in Congress back rooms where policy makers struggle to bridge differences as the midnight deadline went by.
They agreed to keep open the Govt for another two days in order to get the bill signed. So far this year investors have looked past the economic impact of covid but need to see action being taken for the good of the country.

Mrkt volumes were much higher as the expiration of stock index futures & options, known as the 'quadruple witching' hour boosted turnover helped in no small way by trading in Tesla. The Witching Hour takes place every 3rd Friday of each Q.
Whats rapidly becoming a 'New Age' cult stock beloved by investors, Tesla trading was heavy as turn-over topped $120bn with volumes exceeding 200m in after hours deals where some profit taking trimmed gains, the stock closing up 21 at $677. On Monday Tesla will become the most valuable Co ($600bn) ever to be admitted to the benchmark 500 and will be the 7th most valuable company by mrkt cap.

On the NYSE where av daily volume has been 11•6bn saw decliners outpaced risers by 1•41:1 on 15•8bn shares traded, 40 new ups no new lows. Topping the big board, Dow inc, Cisco, Cat & Coca Cola and the laggards Apple, Intel, Chevron & Nike.
On the Nsdq Composite losers beat winners by 1•26:1 with 302 new highs, 9 new lows.

Another good wk for Cpo gaining $28 to average $904 for m-t-d and c.$723 y-t-d* and is on target to average $158 pt more than last year. Buys outpaced sells by 1•44:1 over the wk, shares added 1•5.

KLPI lost 62 on the wk and trades c.5% down ytd. Other London palms closed on the wk as below.

Its taken 16 months since my first purchase of REA at 133 and all points South to reach break-even. I guess that's what you call a long term investment, a long bout of constipation or bloody poor timing in my case!

Now of course would be the time to say "thank you very much" for sfa and move on to pastures new. Yet....I have a nagging feeling there could be a surprise or two brewing and I don't want to sell in delays and disappointment which is what I usually do........
...........so I'm waiting to see if the trading update in Feb will do for the sp what the shark did for the film Jaws!

Its a Friday so I don't expect any fireworks today despite buys outpacing sells by 6:1 yesterday and cpo on a tare up ($24) so far this week. This month Cpo is averaging $892 ($728) and will likely average $200pt more than last year boosting year end revs by possibly $35m.

While those nos are impressive the shares have had a terrible year and given no substantial rise to year end will close c.90p down tanking the value by £36m. However there's always a silver lining even in REA stock. Take the price-to-sales ratio, REAs is •26 (under 1) is considered v.good, essentially this means investors are paying 20c for a $ of earnings (not to be sniffed at) and investors often use p-t-s to seek out undervalued companies.

This can point to a recovery situation and since the low of 45 in September the rebound is underway as the shares have risen 47%. Unfortunately there is a huge gap to be made up to fair value but so far so good.

The Streets 4 main indexes closed at record highs on Thursday as optimism that the stimulus bill was said to be in the final stages of agreement and would be rubber stamped galvanised buyers. The Dow up from the bell traded in a narrow 170 range all session and closed just off its 30,324 high.

Modernas stock got a shot in the arm when a panel of 20 experts agreed to submit for emergency approval its vaccine to the FDA for immediate roll out. Already Canada, UK, Japan, S.Korea & Switzerland have ordered Modernas vaccine (95% effective for over 18s/2 jabs required) & can be stored at household fridge temperatures (-20C) unlike Pfizers which needs (-70C). Moderna will have 6m doses ready by the weekend, stock rose 3% to $140. Cost is not known but $30 a shot has been mentioned. India has 2 vaccines in final stage and is expected to be priced at $3 a jab, if not free for the vast majority.

The other big event today will see Teslas stock rating being decided. The SP 500 is a weighted index by mrkt cap and Teslas free float is $490bn giving it a 1•5% weighting, superseding Berkshire Hathaway (1•4%) as the largest in the 500. Teslas rating was upgraded by S&P Global to (BB) from (BB-) as the companies increasing liquidity has reduced its financial risk.
Shares rose 4% to $648 with the market.

Co results were thin on the ground Accenture boosted the 500 by beating Q4 revs and upped guidance, shares up $18 to $264. Topping the big board, J&J, Home Depot, Nike & Visa, down among the losers Boeing ($221) which has hired 160 pilots to smooth the return of the Max Jet, Intel, Chevron & JPMC. On the NYSE 10•5bn shares were traded advances beating decliners by 2•2:1, 39 new highs no new lows.

I don't know why the Government has targeted pubs to close down under tier 3.
I walked up my High St yesterday and I reckon 99% of shops were open for business, Estate Agents, Charity shops, CEX shops, bookshops etc...
all doing trade.

The year end Santa Rally will be upon us Monday of next week & ending on Jan 5th. Last year's numbers :-

Stocks opened rudderless after mixed messages from the Far East, the Dow slipped 70 from the bell and hit a session low (-110) but bounced as the afternoon crowd sought out oversold stocks. Talk of Congress policy makers were close to signing off on the $900bn stimulus bill which will include $600-$700 cheques to the out of work and extend jobless benefits bouyed sentiment. Fed Chair Powell said rates would be kept at near zero and monies would continue to be funneled into the economy.

Covid Infections some 28% higher than 2 wks ago and deaths continue at an unacceptably high level so much depends on the effective roll out of the vaccine and the take up of inoculations. Currently US cases total 17•4m and fatalities c.315,000.

A note from JPMC on US Airlines caused a 2% sector fall as the Bank issued multiple downgrades due to higher cash burn and flight cancellations among the majors. United, SouthWest, American & Delta all fell between 1%-3% but came off lows.
However 'smokers' were delighted by the news that Aphira & Tilray two Canadian companies have agreed to combine operations in an all share deal (Aphira 62%) worth $2•8bn to become the largest Cannabis producer. Tilray closed 19% better at $9•42 but in late 2018 it was 'puffed' up to $150 a share.

On the NYSE big tech closed at a new record (12,668), up 45% ytd led by Msoft up $5 ($219) which topped the big board, Amazon gained $76 ($3241) & Flix added $5 to $525. Pop fave Tesla ($621) dropped $12 as one bear of the stock said it was worth no more than $80 and is heading for a big fall. He is betting against the crowd.
On the NYSE decliners outnumbered advances by 1•01:1 on a below average total of 9•4bn traded, 31 new 52wk highs, no new lows.
