The cash incentive promised to car-maker Nissan to maintain its UK production was hidden from Government spending watchdog, the Office for Budget Responsibility, despite repeated requests that it be revealed.
In its latest examination of the UK’s economy and finances released alongside the Spring Statement, the OBR reported a disagreement with Government over whether or not the £80m promised to the Japanese car manufacturer ought to have been recorded in public accounts.
The debate raises questions over whether or not such “sweetheart” deals between Government and industry ought to be considered as so-called “contingent liabilities”.
