TBH they haven't sold them down the river, they aren't in NATO, they aren't in any kind of alliance with the West either.
It's desperately sad that Putin has done this but if we get involved on the ground with missiles and bullets we are all dead sooner or later. We don't want World War Three because it will be the last war in human history. Getting involved in someone elses war has never ended well, look at the turn for the worse the world got when Bush senior and Blair decided to mess with Middle Eastern affairs, the genie won't go back in the bottle there and it certainly won't with Russia.
The West will sabre rattle and Putin will take over the rest of the Ukraine and that will be that.
Putin wants to make his mark on history and the West know he's just mad enough to go nuclear if he's pushed.
The big problem is where he looks to next and I'm afraid it's all the other former Soviet states that became part of Europe.
Glasnost is dead and buried but business is business and it will carry on regardless of sanctions.

The problem is Tit for Tat confiscations is not cricket to the UK and Russia don't play cricket.

You are of course correct in what you say and also in your observation about it being a sad day for the people of Ukraine. Hopefully Putin will stop short of a full invasion of the country.

If Ukraine had become a member of NATO we would be looking at WW3 now.

He won't nationalise Western co's , the West will confiscate Russian assets world wide and they have spent a LOT of money buying up the West.
And then what ? If they get into bed with China it would create the greatest distopian empire ever seen.
The West would just turn their backs on commerce with them and at the same time ramp up defences against them.
You can kiss goodbye to a safe world in our lifetime, but the West would carry on without them. As Boris said today, if you carry on in this fashion you simply end up with no friends like N Korea and you've painted yourself into a corner.
This going to be a painful time but we will get through it.

Your post is pretty much how I see it too.
I think maybe the April/May timescales will slip, but I think it will be for good reasons, IE Ascot needs more drilling due to good results etc. It won't drag on for years though IMHO, CB will leave some meat on the bone for the eventual buyer, hopefully with some kind of uplift on significant undiscovered minerals within the licence.
