Scott - in my view any reference to showers is reprehensible at any time but perhaps even more so, if that is possible as we reach an important milestone of remembrance. I could not let that comment slide.

As always when there is no expected news for a few weeks it becomes increasingly hard to pick out the salient and interesting posts here but I understand if is my choice to read before someone from subset 2 has a go!

Richard. The PRA is there to protect the general public by maintaining financial and monetary stability. It takes action deemed necessary for the good of the nation. Covid has presented unequalled challenges requiring a robust response to ensure our financial sector was in the strongest position possible. Investors should take advice about single company stock purchases and the risks involved - any financial expert worth their sale with advise diversification across stocks and sectors as a minimum - better still go into managed funds. Single company exposure has always carried the largest risk and anyone invested with Lloyds over the last 20 years knows that only too well.
The word suspended would indicate that the dividend is in some form of limbo - it is not. If and when a semblance of normality returns in the years to come and the Bank can resume it's dividend payments of course it will. Just look at the actions taken with the increased div over the last few years. Of course the BoD bitterly regret the position that we re in now - don't we all!
PPI hails from the Wild West days of Bankers turned into sales people but do not underestimate the greed of the claims companies and those many thousands of customers who benefitted from payouts during the length of the insurance for illness or redundancy and then went on to claim a full refund. Many of the loans that were never repaid - i.e. the PPI was never paid for in the first place had all their premiums repaid. Why - because of the society of the claims culture. Now is this all down to the Banks? I bet everyone on this BB either claimed themselves or knew someone who did.
One final point - I assume that all here made a personal decision to invest with Lloyds and were not forced to do so?
I ask because it seems everyone these days wants to blame someone else for issues arising out of decisions that they made when you boil it all down. Live, learn and make different decisions next time would be my advice but you can't turn back the clock and I think that some here will make themselves ill by not accepting and moving on. That would be a terrible outcome on top of financial loss.

I assume that all investors with issues over the non payment of the dividend will have familiarised themselves with the official letter from the PRA to AHO. Please note the 4th paragraph and the thinly veiled threat about use of supervisory powers. Then reflect on the regulatory world in which Lloyds operates under the supervision of the PRA and then reflect on whether the BoD had any choice whatsoever in the matter.
You can be angry and you can vent but are you angry and venting in the right direction?

So that is £1B in one day to 32K customers - pretty good going I would say from Lloyds.

Smart move Joe by Newcrest with so much potential global uncertainty on international financing based on capital adequacy requirements for Banks who could have calls for funding requests from unexpected sources as a result of Covid. Cash in the Bank now takes away that question mark over the next 12 to 18 months.

Thanks Oxo - I guess the big question is where do the institutional investors sit with this one - everyone get a vote - they just get more than you or I. I think that we all realise that the big players out there are conservative (with a small c) and unlikely to see a need to rock the boat - against an unknown alternative.
Theosus - interesting on EV's - I think that the loackdown has shown that extraordinary things can happen when our backs are against the wall. The bigger social (global) issue for me however is the short and medium term impact on the developing world and the famines that could entail. All big picture stuff I know but there is a lot out there to put things into perspective against at the moment.

Hi Theosus - I think that we will be moving beyond the confines of ethical banks and need to start to consider bigger picture questions - for example - should Lloyds be providing car finance for diesel cars? What about farmers and meet production if the consensus is that methane gas is contributing to global warming? Plastic manufacturing - when it is environmentally friendly and when is it now. Ethical Banks aren't scratching the surface of the big questions by size and that is where the likes of Lloyds will need to decide where it stands in the future - where are the future boundaries to their responsibilities to society?
Sorry to go off at a tangent but we need to start thinking in terms of a new paradigm in my view.

Theosus - in many ways I agree also with the quasi public company comment in so much as the Bank's go hand in hand with the public sentiment and trust (trust being the foundation of the banker / customer relationship) on what is a journey of social, demographic, economic change against a global climate challenge and ever increasing regulatory oversight. Questions such as what companies should the Bank's being supporting in the future will become an increasingly public debate as global warning and environmental impacts create a tightening noose around society and is it really up to the BoD to make those decisions or take the steer from an increasingly vocal public concerned at our environment or from the government of the day. It is not a simple task running a Bank these days and yet so many can throw stones without providing alternative viable strategies.
Time to think a little deeper in my view as to the roles of our financial institutions and look forward as opposed to what has happened in the past - now more than ever.

Do you think that Lloyds would have won any class action for PPI misselling? AHO was navigating through choppy waters and he had a huge task of repairing the reputational damage sustained in previous years if the group was going to survive and maintain and grow it's franchise. I appreciate that you are looking solely through the lens of a shareholder but the other dimension as a shareholder is that unless he had followed this course of action there might not have been a business to be an owner of. This was always going to be a long struggle over several years and as owners, the simple fact of the matter is that you (we!) are last in the meal line for rations - that is part of the risk you take as a shareholder I'm afraid.

Are we sure it was a buy given the previous price paid for a far less amount 5 minutes earlier?
