POG is going higher because the US government has no choice but to default on its debt by inflating it away ie by printing more money. Cash and bondholders get destroyed in real terms, and all real assets go up alongside inflation. Gold will be a beneficiary as countries around the world debase their fiat currencies to avoid defaulting nominally on their debt. I can't see an alternative, you can only kick the can down the road so long.

Unlike in the 1940s when public spending austerity and gdp growth saved the day, demographics are absolutely not on the government's side anymore. More old ppl in need of state spending, increased defence spending etc... US government has run fiscal deficits every year for over 2 decades now, and with yields where they are they have to borrow just to pay interest on that debt.

You made a remark about interest rates being the problem, but actually the problem was a lack of interest rates for 15 years. Money shouldn't be free - you end up with zombie companies and hyperinflated assets because everyone, including the government, is encouraged to borrow. The reckoning is upon us.

Interest is a very basic fact of life and lending. Why would i ever lend money to someone without being compensated for it?? Don't be silly

Yup, it's a developed market issue (not just the west - see japan and south Korea). It's the existential crisis of our time imo.

And as for populations advancing... Are they? Most of the west is in terminal decline regarding fertility. More old people will definitely be inflationary, and put huge pressure on governments to borrow more money.

You can't just keep printing unfortunately. Just have a look at African countries that don't manage their debt. Have a look at the Venezuelan stock markets performance up until they crashed and burned
