New partnership announcement! 📣💥
I am so pleased to share that MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company is joining the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation as an Impact Partner! 🤝
The world's largest shipping line with more than 700 vessels, MSC's involvement with GCMD adds strength towards and further signals the importance of a collaborative approach to decarbonisation. 🚢
As an Impact Partner, MSC will provide cash towards GCMD's pooled resources for pilots and trials, as well as in-kind contributions through its participation in projects, including providing access to vessels.
On a personal level, I'm excited to get an opportunity to work more closely with my friend Bud Darr. 🥰
Will #Ports become #CleanEnergyHubs? How to de-risk #energytransition projects? Back to Abu Dhabi to discuss!
The International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH) #WorldPortsConference happened this week in parallel to the #PreCOP28
The Panel on #Derisking Energy transition looked at:
👉Current requirements to be #ParisAgreement aligned.
👉Off take agreements! Offtake agreements!
👉Large scale #GigawattProjects (Multibillion USD)
👉Hubs and role of Multilateral Dev.Banks
👉Cross-sectoral Alignment of #investment so outputs are #actually used.
👉#CEMHubs as public-private initiative for low-carbon fuels (Sustainable #Biofuels and #Hydrogen based) close to the #ports.
Fruitful collaboration between #Shipping 🚢 and #Ports ⚓️ International Chamber of Shipping & International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH)
and together with the #EnergySector International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)
Looking forward to hearing what Budd has to say, this meeting has Quadrise written all over it
Burning #sugars in engines may seem like an outlandish idea, but our partner Quadrise Plc has already conducted successful trails on a Cummins Inc. diesel engine at Aquafuel Research Limited with our EU REDII (IX-A) compliant Crude sugar oil (#CSO®) in their #BioMSAR® formulation.
This CSO is EU compliant, there may be a surprise that it can slip into play without a LONO, there is only a small amount of water in the bio mix, that might be able to be replaced by glycerine.

Quadrise Plc is working on some promising hashtag#glycerol - heavy residual oils blends (hashtag#BioMSAR) together with MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company.
Through our ongoing efforts with Quadrise Plc, our crude sugar oil (hashtag#CSO) will hopefully also soon be part of the hashtag#BioMSAR family, thereby allowing us to help hashtag#decarbonize existing vessels as well.
Should get these promising results this week.
I would imagine, given the magnitude of getting an oil major, a bunker terminal, MSC and the associated logistics
that come with this level of trial, that there will be more than one ship, possibly more than one shipping company involved in the upcoming trial, then BoB comes into the equation, l which in turn brings another vessel.
The Utah low sulphur feedstock into Biomsar can be used on ships without scrubbers.
I’ll take 10p by close on Monday.
From 5th September 2021
Maersk, the world's second largest shipping line by container capacity, is among companies that have invested heavily in scrubbers, installing the system aboard nearly 100 of its container vessels as part of its 2040 net zero ambitions.
So Maersk have at least 20 years left to be sourcing residual fuel, the anticipated roll out that Jason spoke of at the AGM aligned with investment banks getting onboard to ensure they could achieve roll out of our fuel once it’s proven. No wonder he was smirking
Maersk invested in Vertoro in 2021, probably around the same time that Quadrise got involved with them, Jason said that he had been working with Vertoro for around a year before he announced our collaboration.
This from MAERSK
Lignin fuels have a promising potential when it comes to decarbonising shipping. We consider Vertoro to be a leading start-up in the sustainable biomass-to-liquids space and we are excited to invest in the company and become part of the efforts to effectively scale up production of green fuels. Furthermore, we believe that we can offer value beyond capital through the expertise and scale of the broader Maersk organisation.

So, inevitably with Maersk having a vested interest, they will be lurking.
Bud Darr, Executive Vice President, Maritime Policy and Government Affairs at MSC Group
It is a true pleasure to see this degree of collaboration from such a top group of prominent leaders in the Shipping community toward the common good. We absolutely must continue to rise to this challenge and forge the solutions. No one can do this alone and collaboration may just be the most important fuel for a decarbonized future!
In a groundbreaking move, the CEOs of the world’s leading shipping companies, including MSC, have united to address a critical issue: decarbonizing global maritime transport.
In a joint declaration at COP 28, the CEO's are calling for an end date for fossil-only powered newbuilds and urging the IMO to create the regulatory conditions to accelerate the transition to green fuels.
Their joint declaration calls for the establishment of four regulatory ‘cornerstones’:
• An end date for new building of fossil fuel-only vessels
• An effective GHG pricing mechanism
• A vessel pooling option for GHG regulatory compliance
• A Well-to-Wake or lifecycle GHG regulatory basis
Soren Toft, MSC's CEO, said: “We are proud to be part of this unprecedented collaboration with our peers and it is only right that together we follow this path towards net zero that we must achieve by 2050."
So when MSC have proved our fuel up, then MSC share all the info with other shipping companies.
I remember Maersk wanted a share of profits from any other shippers adopting our fuel, greedy Bastards
Who else could it be, MSC choose who they work with not Jason, they have already chosen Shell, bring it on.
Today, it’s been a year since we signed the collaboration agreement with Shell Marine to work closely together to help decarbonise shipping.
"Our strategic partnership with Shell plays an important role for the energy transition we are undergoing at MSC," commented Bud Darr, Executive Vice President of Maritime Policy and Government at MSC Group.
As Melissa Williams, President of Shell Marine, said a year ago: “Shell wants to play a central role in the transition to net-zero. Partnering with our customers to develop new technologies and fuels will help accelerate progress. Combining MSC’s experience as one of the world’s largest shipping companies with Shell’s expertise as a global energy supplier will help bring about effective solutions for this vital part of the world economy.”
With our partner MSC, we reaffirm our commitment to a net zero future for the shipping industry.
Then there's this guy who want's a share of the Quadrise offering.
Steven Byle, Executive Chairman, Heavy Sweet Oil
I am Co-Founder of this world class oil project on a multi-billion barrel resource in Utah. The company is targeting in-situ heavy sweet oil sands at shallow depths with enhance oil recovery using flue gas and steam. Beyond simple production, the company targets CO2 sequestration at unprecedented levels due to the unconsolidated sands. It further aims to mix its oil with waste from bio-diesel to offset emissions and produce a bio-fuel.
I can only see us lasting to the interim Lono on bio msar, as Jason said”I can’t believe how well this stuff burns, no matter what you do with it”. We will be taken out mid-next year. The majors can’t allow us to gain too much momentum. Name your price, we own 60 percent of the company
Happy days
It is the 40 percent CSO results that are being disclosed this week, given the glycerine supply only allows us 2 years of roll out, my take is the CSO results are paramount for the major to jump on board, the final nail, the future is bright

If you are at COP 28 in Dubai on 9 Dec, I hope you can join us for what promises to be a very interesting event!
COP28 side event - The 2023 IMO GHG Strategy: Defining the global level-playing-field for shipping decarbonization
Wouldn't be surprised if Jason and Andy have their tickets ready
Its December tomorrow, the results from Aquafuel on the CSO Biomsar tests are due this week, could be the final piece of the jigsaw to kick the whole trial off.
Headlines, MSC trialling a shipping fuel with 70% less carbon content than traditional fuels, 70% of the fuel is renewable glycerine or forestry biomass

“MSC currently consumes close to 10m tonnes of fuel oil annually and we believe Quadrise could charge c.$50 per tonne for licensing its technology.”
