You got it Happy - buybacks are symptomatic of

A) why did the BoD over issue so many shares historically ?

B) a BoD on eyewatering salaries but haven’t a clue where to direct the company’s excess cash - so resort to buybacks as a default (to show us how they are working themselves to the bone on our behalf)!

Best return is always to use these funds to increase the dividends and buy back DEBT.

A similar sum - distributed in a policy of regular dividends - will positively influence our SP.

As long as the related RNS contains the phrase «to be cancelled» then at least the shares are not languishing «in treasury» - which means - as we all know now - that they will be dished out later to management as (usually unearned and unjustified) bonuses.

Buybacks NEVER show a tangible benefit to shareholders.

They are used in two circumstances:

1) Symptomatic of a BoD who are at a loss as to what to do, so fallback on buybacks as a last resort to justify their positions.

2) Where the buyback shares are thereafter said to be «held in treasury» - this is a scam as the Treasure is inevitable later handled out to management in the form of bonuses.
