@dixon, Thank you, they look very interesting indeed. I shall investigate further and possibly buy a small slice . I'm presently over cautious about the shadow banking crisis in the US and worry if it is going to affect anything this side of the pond - but if they look solid - I'll shall add some. @Dixon, a couple of things that I thought off - while chewing over the subject (i too am looking for long term income - so often reflect on avenues and changes in finciail products). Annuities - those boring old things that people were forced to buy with a pension lump sum - they may help diversify - BUT more importantly there are a whole array of exotic annuities on the market - some which offer a fixed/index link income for a set period of time - while giving you a lump sum back at the end of that period - I beleive you can buy them with cash , and dont actually need a pension kump sum .??

They are not a boring 1 size fits all, and with bonds and tresuraries going up in yield - they might also be worth a look ??

Sounds good dixon, dont forget a small amount of physical gold and silver (in full britania form, cgt exempt)- my garden loves them ;o) - insurance money - incase the world goes made.

@dixon, obviously use your ISA - Im sure you knew this, and lastly there is an ETF which can do all this for you (I can't remember its name )- something like 'high yielding aristocrats' - maybe someone can also help

@dixon, one last important thing, When I did - what you are doing,,, I planned it on a spreadsheer first, and noted the Ex-Divi dates. I would not generally buy a stock if the ex-divi date is very close - becuase its price may be 'swelling' due to others buying it for the divi,, I would wait to after divi date (pay date) and buy in the drop. :)

@dixon1, Morning. Im no expert so please do your own research. What I did was picked a range of companies in a range of sectors/ industries ,, and didnt always chase the highest dividend. (ideally you want world companies) But I stuck with UK companies - FTSE 100 - since you don’t have to worry about FX charges - But world Companies help a lot - ETF's such as VFEG /VFEM can give you exposure to eastern/ developing markets - but they do go up and down.

The reason I didn’t always pick the highest divi stock is because a company can choose to stop paying the DIVI - and if that happens you might need to sell stock to keep an income. Also if a company is paying a big divi - they sometimes don’t increase in value per stock. Some old Favs are BATS/IMB - big payers, ITH - oil - v.big payer, BP/Shell, NG , unilever, rio,

What I did was make a spread sheet of each month , and picked stock to try a level out the income / per month - so that I always have something coming in . BATS and BP cover 8 of the months between them alone.

My rule was - the smaller the company , or the ore UK focused (wix , pets for example ) - the less I would purchase.

Altogether I hold about 25 stock which supplements my pension.

Also consider what companies will do well during a down turn and also add some staples into the mix (tesco, sainsburys, unilever, british foods etc)

Hope this gives you ideas , Im happy to hear other peoples ideas too (but be kind)

I slight ginger here - I agree, I go rock lobster and then peal. I love sunny days - but always wear a hat and keep covered up. research into skin cancer over the last 20 years has shown that just getting burnt once in your life (even at an early age) - can dramatically increase the chance of skin cancer later in life . Sorry to hear about those with it , or relatives. I don’t think any harm was meant at all. :) peace dudes , enjoy the bank holiday , great to see RR climb before it closed.
