@retirment, I don’t know where you live, possible within about 30 miles of London I'm guessing. But here and the wider communities of the UK, we live a much more honest life style - where paying in cash is normal. Many of us grew up in a world where credit cards and debt are dirty - apart from a mortgage. If you can't afford to buy it in cash -don't.

I know two mates who run businesses - and neither like cards - because of the premium they have to pay for the transaction - American Express is the worse. One has been in business for 30years and refuses cards altogether , he pops to the bank a couple of times a week- they all pay their taxes.,,, and yet they get bugger all help from the government or compassion from HMRC when they make an honest mistake.

I need to leave the bubble of the Surraaay or Essex :)

@bav, a friend told me about one of his family members (who he is ashamed off)- they were on benefits, so sold their house to the daughter and then attempted to claim housing benefit. thankfully they got caught. Another of his family tried to hide cash from the tax man in premium bonds,,, and even said he put it there because he wanted to get a guaranteed 4% return LOL. They are not bright in this town LOL Annoyingly – they didn’t get a prison sentence, and it’s the likes of them as to why we get dragged over the coals.

@retirement , what is 'zizzi'. i dont think they have that up here in yorkshire, If you come north - bring cash,, we wont think you're dodgy,,, well maybe we will, but it wont be becuase you are using cash :P

@retirement. I always pay in cash. unless its the supermarket. I've had house repairs , car repairs - always paid in cash - what they do or dont do regarding tax - is up to them.

@retirment, Another example- My friend sold his holiday home in my town - to a member of his family. He sold it at the same price that he paid 15 years earlier - since he didnt want to bother with paper work (CGT) and it was going to a family member - and so wanted to help him out. HMRC computer sent a letter nudging him that he might owe tax - when he phoned HMRC and spoke with a real person - that person said that they didnt know why he'd been sent the letter - there were no notes on the system. The connect system had just spotted a house sale and naturally thought that CGT is due. Its all computerised - and triggers letters. The HMRC staff then wait for you to figure out why their computer has sent a letter. The issue was cleared quickly - but it demonstrates how its all tied together. We have boat people to pay for ;0)

Retirement, Taking a load of money to the bank and saying you sold a car - is all fine and good, the bank wont care. BUT HMRC computer system will be looking as to where that money came from - and if their is no record of sale via DVLA - then your plan fails. Gold and silver Britannia’s are the best route. - small coins which don’t incur CGT , they have a face value of £100 and £2

I went down the local amusements a few months back - on the 10p machines, but on the big paying machines - £500 jackpot - were a couple of guys feeding £20 notes in - they had six machines going at the same time. Each had a bundle of notes and were racing between the machines to keep them ticking over - I thought it suspect, then I realized - that the machines cash out with paper receipts - which have to be feed into another machine to collect the money - This payout machine gives you a final receipt – a record of winnings . All I could conclude was that they were laundering money

HMRC have a computer system (called - connect) which flags up peoples spending and life style against their declared income. Chances are you might get caught out - once they have you in their radar - they are like a dog with a bone. While their system is presently definitely focusing on people-on-benefits ,,, it can be turned onto anyone and everyone.

If this deal goes through -regarding the money- $2m per ship - What I despise the most is that every man women and child on this planet will be paying for this for a very long time- since everything is dripping in oil (from agriculture to the production of pharmaceuticals ) , all the while Trump dances around telling the world what a wonderful deal maker his is.
