It's the mentality of a Trump voter. Very easy to manipulate these people, they don't do much critical thinking, it's all 'system 1' - i.e. appealing to subconscious prejudice/fears. No better way to rouse a rabble than to tell them they are being held back by a shadow elite cabal that only you can stop.

Well said :) Obviously charity is a very personal thing. I am utilitarian in outlook and like to prioritise charities which demonstrate the most efficient use of funds. There is a whole 'effective altruism' movement focused on this. Givewell.org is good for research.

At the moment I like AgainstMalaria - supplies $4 mosquito nets (malaria still killing 750k people a year) and the Schistosomiasis Control Initiative (horrible neglected tropical disease which keeps kids away from school). If your priority is to maximise reduction of human suffering for your money, you could do worse.

I thought it was a good point and question. The article maybe jumps to a conclusion a bit, otherwise it's fine, and has lots of cited sources and peer-reviewed science. More articles like that would be great.

An academic writing an article about a promising trial does not have to have an agenda. Bizarre as it may seem, some folks are actually motivated by advancing science, rather than winning internet arguments or making money. Science advances by getting gradually less wrong, if no-one is pointing out flaws or problems, it's broken.

I don't think there's much relevance given the big differences in dosing, course etc but even if there were - nothing there I find worrying personally.

I'd be interested to read the article if there's a way to get it past the filter.

A very wide array of drugs have this sort of side effect warning, essentially if anyone suffers mental health problems during a trial it has to be considered as a possibility, and since mental health problems are so widespread it's probably quite difficult to finish a trial without any.

I think I would take my chances on (worse) depression to avoid drowning in my own lungs.

Remember we're not talking about a chronic condition (as far as we know) - it's a 14 day course. Side effects are most likely to be temporary.
