Interferon Beta is itself a cytokine. Cytokines are like messengers between cells, they attach to receptors on the outside of the cell and the receptor passes the message to the inside, in this case through something called the JAK-STAT pathway. 2 stats form a dimer which is then allowed into the nucleus of the cell, where the DNA is, so can turn certain genes on or off.
Cytokines themselves are not a problem - but having lots too many can cause a cytokine 'storm', where the immune system is over-reacting and damaging the good cells as a result
