"People Hacker: Confessions of a Burglar for Hire" - Jenny Radcliffe, 2023
" ... It was a warm summer afternoon when I made my move. Dressed in a nondescript black shirt and trousers, I put on a yellow high-visibility vest and, carrying a clipboard, made my way to the rear of the building and sat down in a staff smoking area hidden away from the bustle of the main lobby.
Before too long, several staff came out for their coffee break and smiled at me, gossiping about their supervisors and discussing plans for the weekend. I noticed that most of them were in the uniform of a coffee franchise that was situated inside the building. It's a fatal flaw of many security programmes that while the actual employees of the firm may well receive awareness training and have technical and physical precautions in place to keep them safe, often contractors and franchises, also allowed into the site, do not. The cleaners, gardeners and maintenance staff rarely receive any help, and it leaves the castle, as it were, vulnerable. After all, why bother raising the drawbridge if the maid can walk in through an open side door?
I got chatting to a couple of women close by, commenting on their nails and talking about how it had been a tough week and I, like them, was also looking forward to the weekend. I was, I mentioned, going to go in, do my health and safety inspection and then go and have some drinks with the girls. As they got up to leave, I took a few steps in the opposite direction, but then seemed to change my mind and followed them towards the staff door up ahead. 'Easier this way,' I said, rolling my eyes, and they laughed in agreement as I followed them through the door and into the building. They waved a cheerful goodbye and disappeared down a corridor, while I made my way forward, glancing around for some stairs."
