As it's a partnership, AFC and ABB share each others sales leads. Yes ABB must have a much larger number of these because they cover 100 countries and have done for a long time, but I don't think this will have a bearing on the way the deal works financially.

AFC are putting Fuel Cells, Fuel Cell Software and BoP into the system. ABB are putting EV Chargers, EV Charger Software and Battery packs into the system. ABB have a profit margin on their parts, AFC have a profit margin on their parts. Both can contribute fairly equally to the final product and still maintain their existing profit level, they don't need to split the profit in favour of one or the other.

Whoever does the installation will make an extra profit on that.

AFC solves a lot of problems ABB currently have with grid capacity and remote sites, problems that are restricting ABB's sales. This bottleneck is removed by AFC. ABB are reciprocating that help by helping AFC shift a lot more systems than they were going to under their own conservative plans.

So I see no reason for kickbacks.

But we don't need FIVE threads started with the title TAX, why can't people keep the conversation to the same thread, it's not exactly rocket science to post replies on the same thread!!

I don't think the value of the partner makes a lot of difference once you get into the £billions of turnover annually.

What I will say though, is that Bosch have a plan for mass production with CWR in 2024, ABB will be selling AFC based systems from around mid-2021 and AFC will (with it's outsourced mass manufactured components) can start mass manufacturing systems as soon as it has finished fitting out the new factory unit, very soon that is. AFC can reach 200MW capacity at it's factory when it starts building higher density Membrane based Fuel Cells in 2022, Bosch are targeting 200MW in 2024.

Obviously that is just capacity, they need to be able to sell this amount of systems every year. I don't really know much about Bosch's plans for sales, but ABB + AFC offering EV Charging systems in 100 countries makes it entirely possible that they could sell that much each year.

CWR/Bosch aren't doing EV Chargers, that's why they are not on that chart? They are doing heating and microgrids.

As far as the AFC+ABB deal goes, I'm pretty sure it's been done so that ABB can fix existing client issues ASAP, for example where chargers have been installed but cannot pull enough power from the grid to work at their full capacity, where multiple chargers have been installed but if more than one or two are used the power level drops on all of them due to grid limitations, where clients cannot install the rapid chargers they need without spending millions on grid upgrades and waiting a year for those upgrades to be completed.

These are all low hanging fruit that AFC+ABB will be looking at right now, so they can get those deals as soon as the AFC+ABB EV Charger is available for demonstration.

EV Charging Equipment Market Is Booming Worldwide

I see Siemens are getting a chunk of the pie, which is interesting when you know they liked the AFC+ABB news item on Twitter. Several other names on the chart that could be lining up for OEM deals with AFC.

That sounds inefficient at first when you think of all the conversion losses. At second glance, however, the elegance of the approach becomes apparent.

Wherever the electricity infrastructure is insufficient, this emission-free system can be used flexibly, be it at sporting events, construction projects, remote tourist locations or bus stations. In most applications, the necessary hydrogen is likely to be delivered in large tanks, but it could also be generated locally with solar cells.

And when the hydrogen is already there, it naturally makes sense to be able to fill up with hydrogen for fuel cell vehicles. The joint use with battery electric vehicles would lower the investment and operating costs, which further increases the attractiveness.

What that means for investors
The exchange is thrilled with this approach and has propelled AFC shares way higher. For a company that previously focused entirely on research and development and posted no sales, the deal with ABB could be the big breakthrough. ABB stock, on the other hand, looks unimpressed by this development, although it should represent an important step in defending the high market share in fast charging stations.

But the point that is decisive for me in this matter is different: The innovative approach shows that the hydrogen economy is not only needed for fuel cell vehicles and various industrial and niche applications, but can also give battery-electric mobility an additional boost. There will be fast charging stations in places where you would have been glad to find a Schuko socket at all.

And we can assume that further pioneering innovations will happen in quick succession. It should therefore be a good idea for investors to look around the value chain, from lithium to charging network operators, for exciting stocks.

AFC Energy takes off thanks to the ABB deal - what hydrogen fans should know

One of the many somewhat short-sighted arguments from skeptics of electromobility is as follows: If several thousand electric cars are charged at once in a city, the power grid will collapse. And I'm sure you're right. Actually.

Because with a little more foresight, you would see that solutions are becoming visible on the horizon. For example, if fast-charging champion ABB (WKN: 919730) with electrolysis specialist AFC Energy (TSX: A0MNJ0) gets together, then the investors who should in shares to invest around the electric mobility, attracted attention.

The problem with the power grid
Kettles that are operated with 2 kilowatts can push the house power grid to the limit if the wiring is not favorable. But in an electric car, the charging current at home and also at many public charging points is 11 or 22 kilowatts. That is a lot, but it is by no means the end of the flagpole.

If Porsche has its way, then 350 kilowatts should flow to fast charging stations. Imagine that 48 million cars in Germany are all charged at the same time at the start of the summer holidays. That results in up to 17 terawatts. For comparison: the peak load in Germany is around 82 gigawatts.

Although it is unrealistic for all cars to be connected to a fast charging station at once, the fact that around 200 times more capacity would be needed than is currently available makes it clear that a growing problem could develop here.

Innovative solutions are in sight
As long as the proportion of rechargeable cars is still low, you hardly have to worry about the power grid. However, innovative solutions will soon be needed. This includes, for example, dynamic load and charging management, such as the one developed by Schneider Electric (WKN: 860180). This ensures that not all cars connected in one area charge at full power at the same time.

One consequence of this, however, is that the electricity is regulated down when it is used intensively, which slows down the charging cycle. This can be avoided if a buffer storage device such as a stationary lithium battery with a high output power is used. Various providers have presented corresponding solutions, including Akasol ( NASDAQ : AKASOL) or Porsche with its powerful battery truck.

The Mahle start-up chargeBIG even combines both ideas in a highly scalable approach. Load peaks can thus be excluded and high charging currents can still be achieved. However, a thick power cable still has to be laid to the charging system. This can also be avoided with a third idea.

ABB and AFC Energy want to jointly market a system that produces electricity locally with hydrogen and stores it in a powerful buffer battery. Depending on the design, almost any number of charging points can be attached to this.

From the video interview with the boss last week, it's pretty clear that AFC and ABB are already working on firming up sales leads prior to having the demo system up and running, so that leads can quickly be converted to sales.

Nikola will need BIG EV chargers for their trucks, as they have 500 kWh, 750 kWh and 1,000 kWh options, so I'd put them on the list of ABB clients

Sounds like low hanging fruit to me! They have most likely already discovered grid issues, now ABB have the solution!

Uber to invest £200m to help London drivers switch to EV

Uber anticipates 20,000 of its 45,000 drivers upgrading to EVs by the end of 2021.

A further £5m will be invested in London’s charging infrastructure over the next three years.

The funding is part of Uber’s Clean Air Plan, which will aim to convert every car that uses the ride-hailing app to EV by 2025.

Right now we are only looking at EV Charging where the grid does not have enough capacity or where the grid does not exist.

Where the grid does not exist, the installation would clearly be stand alone, as there is no grid there to connect it to. If this is an EV Charger or Service Station in the middle of the dessert, then the Fuel Cell could supply all power for the site, possibly with some Solar Power alongside it.

Where the grid is limited, there are choices, one of which is stand alone. Another choice is that the batteries get trickle charged from a bit of spare grid capacity, and boosted by the fuel cell when in use.

The fuel cell would not feed back into the grid, it is sized so that it supplies only what's needed by the batteries/EV Chargers or site.
