RE: USA is MASSIVE postential for AFC + ABB18 Jan 2021 10:05
Garry,
WRT USA longer distances, what you have to look at is how EV's are developing and who is going to buy them and when.
First movers know they don't need 500 mile range, they know they need to stop for a comfort break every 2-3 hours of driving (as recommended by AA, RAC, etc), people that don't are not drinking the recommended daily water intake or have cast iron bladders.
Driving without stopping every 2-3 hours is deemed dangerous, because drivers can fall asleep at the wheel or go into zombie mode where they fail to react quickly enough when there's traffic stopped ahead, so they plough into the back of them. Too many are too impatient and stupid. Leaving an hour earlier so you can take 2 or 3 comfort breaks is not a big deal, and far safer. Again, for those people it is just a mindset change.
Stopping for a comfort break means you can top the car up, so where idiots say they don't want to stop for fuel on a 3 hour plus journey, they are not, they are stopping to get fresh air, wake up, stretch legs, drink coffee, use the bathroom. While they are doing this the car is getting a boost back to 80%+ ready for the next leg. they don't need to stay with the car when this happens, like they do with a combustion engine car, so it is no hassle or wasted time at all.
So first movers, knowing the above, have already bought EV's over the past decade.
The next wave of EV buyers have just been waiting for the right car for them (Brand, style, capacity, towing ability, price, etc). Many are already piling into the new Audi for example, which is not a cheap car at about £60k, but Audi has a lot of fans and thus sold 47,000 in 2020 with just one model available, this year they have multiple models and will sell loads more. Some wanted a Model 3 and we know the 3 is a best seller in the USA and EU, especially in Norway. There are loads of new models out his year, and these will hit the next wave of buyers.
Some want ridiculously longer range and will get it eventually, as battery technology improves, as it has been doing consistently for over a decade.
The only people left driving a combustion car will be knuckle dragging Neanderthals that think EV's are evil and only a V8 monster truck is what they should drive.
