Fine, so where can a Syrian person apply for a student or work visa to study in the UK? How can they apply for asylum if they are fleeing war? Answer: There are no places outside the UK where they can apply. They have to enter the country illegally and then apply. We create the environment that makes them have to cross the channel in a dinghy! It's laughable how inept the government and its supporters are on this subject.

The "of sorts" refers to the fact that Russia is directly engaged. The "proxy" is that Ukraine is doing the fighting with NATO weapons because NATO can't engage directly without awful consequences.
But if you want to think in such a limited way like LTI that "NATO is not at war with Russia so not the enemy." then go ahead.

Ukraine doesn't have the weaponary to fight Russia. We know that, NATO knows that.
NATO knows Ukranians will defend themselves with whatever they have.
NATO knows Ukraine will therefore ask for NATO weapons.
NATO provides said weapons and Ukraine uses them to fight Russia (NATO's enemy).
NATO's weaponary in the hands of Ukranians is fighting an ideolistic war against Russia.
NATO would be happy to see Russia severely weakened or at least become a Pariah state (no longer accepted as Tory donors hey?).
Therefore, this is a Proxy war of sorts.

Granted, it's not a traditional proxy war. But this is quite clearly a proxy war between one (semi) former superpower in Russia and Nato. Russia know Nato won't engage directly, so by proxy this is done by arming the Ukranians in defence of their own coutnry.

You can't post all wars into convenient postboxes.
