Element1 - "Indeed... It has a habit of getting lost - thanks to the proliferation of dementia".
A word to the wise, my father, who had enjoyed a life replete with both academic and practical skills unfortunately succumbed to dementia in his late eighties. He'd managed his own parents' estate down to decimal places, but when I suggested he might feel more settled to take professional advice, he flat-out refused. I asked my elder sister to also encourage him (particularly since she'd been nominated an executor), but she was reticent. Needless to say, not only had he made insufficient provision for his long-term care home expenses, but his will was materially out of date when he died. Not only did probate take an age, but the IHT bill and legal fees were eye-watering. I do not intend to subject my three daughters to that and I'm certain it was not his true intent. Planning should be complete before there's any tangible evidence of dementia.
