This news wasn't expected so soon. imo this is the best RNS GDR have ever had. The RNS and the breakthrough programme tells investors that the FDA are now doing their best to help our product get to market as soon as possible, the very lucrative US market . All UK related RNS's pale into insignficance compared to this RNS imo, simply because of the size of the US market and the litigation costs in USA. Every health company that uses the anitbiotic gentamicin will want this. And don't forget , the side effects of this antibiotic on the ear affect 11% of the people who take it, not just babies.... /
granted AIHL won't prevent hearing loss, as the effects are not all down to a the person carrying the specific gene AIHL tests for, but unless I'm wrong it means that EVERY US PATIENT who will receive gentamicin must first be tested for the gene in order to reduce the chance of damage to the ear (if there is damage and the medical centre didn't use AIHL poc to test beforehand, they will be sued).
"Inner ear
About 11% of the population who receives aminoglycosides experience damage to their inner ear.[21] The common symptoms of inner ear damage include tinnitus, hearing loss, vertigo, trouble with coordination, and dizziness.[22] Chronic use of gentamicin can affect two areas of the ears. First, damage of the inner ear hair cells can result in irreversible hearing loss. Second, damage to the inner ear vestibular apparatus can lead to balance problems.[22] To reduce the risk of ototoxicity during treatment, it is recommended to stay hydrated.[13]
Factors that increase the risk of inner ear damage include:[13][14]
Increased age
High blood uric acid levels
Kidney dysfunction
Liver dysfunction
Higher doses
Long courses of therapy
Also taking strong diuretics (e.g., furosemide)"
