RE: Engine problems, I believe9 Jan 2017 16:46
anon3, hairline cracks happen all the time in aviation. There are lots of things they can do to mitigate it becoming an issue. Sometimes it as simple as checking it doesnt get bigger. It will depend on where the crack is of course. A casing is much less serious than a compressor blade!
Known issues can be given a "life" so if a problem occurs every 1000 flying hours they might change it every 500, so is never really a safety issue, possibly what you experienced.
Any "real issues" would of course get worked on, better materials, new design etc which might be more costly and Im sure all engines go through teething problems whereby they have to engineer out flaws.
