It comes days after separate polling by Survation found Ms Reeves was the least popular member of the Cabinet, with a net favourability rating of -11.“

Rachel Reeves is preparing for another blame game.

The Chancellor has become an expert at pointing the finger at somebody else when seeking to explain Britain’s high borrowing and tepid growth rate.

First, it was the Tories, who left a £22bn “black hole” in public finances. Then it was regulators who had stifled growth and strangled businesses with red tape. Now, it’s Donald Trump’s fault for imposing global trade tariffs and shaking up geopolitics.

“The world has changed and across the globe we are feeling the consequences,” Reeves said this month after official figures showed the economy shrank at the start of the year.

On Wednesday, the Chancellor will make the argument again when the Office for Budget Responsibility’s (OBR) slashes its growth forecasts in half. Ostensibly she will blame the changing world – i.e. Trump – for Britain’s woes.

“British households are increasingly pessimistic about the state of the economy in a blow to Rachel Reeves as she gears up for her Spring Statement.

More than half of the public now believe the economy is worsening and just one in 10 believe growth is improving, according to KPMG. Some 58pc of people surveyed said the economy was going in the wrong direction, up from 43pc before Christmas.

Households are now cutting back spending and saving more as a result in a move that will further damage growth prospects. Respondents said they were eating out less, spending less on clothing and ordering fewer takeaways.

Linda Ellett, of KPMG UK, said: “Some may be taking this action as they prepare for higher costs, such as a new mortgage deal or the higher cost of travel. But other cautious consumers are certainly preparing for the potential impact on them from what they believe to be a worsening economy.”
