Fellow posters, it's great to have serious debate & let's not forget we are all entitled to our opinions, after all these are just opinion boards.
Can money be made from miners? Of course it can, patience is required as with all stocks & a drink with Captain Hindsight does help as the LSE sage that is Strictlybricks often says.
I recall asking my broker about BHP when it was in the 520's some years ago pre covid, he advised against it & I remember his words being "They are out of favour with the market". I chose to buy however & to sell with a 90% profit less than a couple of years later & just look where they are now, plus some good dividends will have been paid in the years following.
Can money be made from the Glencore SP? Just look at the performance charts on the popular broker sites, say over a ten year period & you'll have the answer, a resounding Yes. It's just that miners are out of favour at the moment.
In my opinion big miners & housebuilders are where it's at currently but again I say patience is required. I for one am happy to put my hard earned where my mouth is, I will be buying both soon
Good luck all & keep posting opinions but not insults when others offer differing thoughts please.
I am grateful for the replies to my questions of Feb 10th, very interesting & enlightening.
I had a little fortunate dabble last week buying a few AAL but got cold feet so sold & made a little profit of a few hundred pounds, lucky timing on this occasion.
I have considered buying a fund in this sector but as 'Fromage' says they aren't much fun.
I think that I will wait until the upcoming results have been declared before making any purchases, it looks like dividends will be cut across the board so I'll be monitoring share prices accordingly.
Again many thanks & good luck to everyone.
As the end of the financial year approaches my 20K cash needs to find it's way into my AJBell ISA for investment.
I am of an age where I invest for dividends to supplement pensions, share price fluctuations are less of a concern.
I own a fair amount of stocks already but am light in the banking sector & am thinking of 10K each in two of either BARC, LLOY, NWG or HSBC.
As such I would be grateful for any polite, helpful comments from those more experienced than I & am favouring BARC above the other 3. I fear LLOY may get clobbered in the car finance debacle about to gain momentum.
Thanks all & good luck.
It's dropping a lot more now.
Having sold at 14.83 I'm looking to buy back in as I'm confident in HB's mid to long term.
As for when to buy back in if only I could have a drink with the Captain Hindsight fella that Strictly often mentions.
Roxi, the last time I looked at the balance sheet net debt was up but was well covered by cash profits (AAL have I think a policy of paying out 40% of profits in dividends). I'm thinking of investing here soon as this has to be a very good take over target for the bigger chaps in this industry.
To answer your question mate next weeks results may mean guidance & the dividend yield will come under pressure.
At todays price the divi is 9.5% so there's room there, albeit none of us want to receive any less.
If I was a betting man I would say the divi will be held, just my opinion but WDIK.
I agree that share price fluctuations / company valuations etc are annoying but if you want straight forward, dependable dividends held in an ISA in order to mitigate tax then aren't banking shares worthy of consideration as part of a balanced portfolio?
Whilst I realise that divi's may be reduced if a company decides to at today's prices as I type NWG will pay around 6.63% & LLOY 5.75%, better than you can get in a cash ISA.
It's the old boys (& girls) club Wm.
You have to have gone to the right school, be a Knight of the realm or an heriditary Lord to get an eye in at board level.
To answer your question they don't give a flying f**k because they always get their millions.
It is being reported that there will be a modest rise in the inflation figures to be posted this week. So, I’m not expecting any good news here or within the stock market in general in the near future, hope I’m wrong though I mostly am.
Dear posters, although I’ve been investing for some years I’ve never brought into this sector so am hoping to learn from those more experienced ... be gentle please!!
I have built up a decent holding in excess of 200K through a bit of trading & rising SP’s elsewhere & am currently fully in cash sitting in ISA's. I'm now at a stage of my life where I will be holding companies long term & will be investing for dividend income. I am looking at buying one or all of GLEN, AAL or RIO & am posting here as part of my research. Many thanks for any advice & who to buy, not to buy etc ... (also posted on GLEN & RIO)

Oh dear. I say that as I was thinking of investing here until I read the recent posts, all a bit doomy & gloomy.
FWIW I am of an age where share price rises don't matter too much to me I just want somewhere to park some money (currently a 45K ISA) & take the dividends. LLOY is showing 5.8% yearly dividend at the current price.
Rob îs 100% correct in that share buy backs do not have any tangible effect on the share price of a company, just look at LLOY & Tesco & many, many others. I say again the ordinary share holder does not benefit. But, the directors of companies with their snouts in the trough do benefit. Buy backs that cancel shares reduce the number of shares in existence thereby increasing the earnings per share which lo & behold assists directors greatly by hitting the targets in the gold plated contracts.
Whilst we are on the topic just look at the list of VOD's directors, Lords & their Lady wives, Sir this & the other, it's a big overfilled trough at Vodafone.
I always preferred Thunderbirds & in fact my 4 year old grandson now agrees.
Brings back memories of queing up in Hamleys for the last Tracey Island on sale in the UK.
I was a popular dad that particular Christmas.
As regards to shares as this is a share board it's getting back to my 245 buy back in price.
Mesh you are delusional & sounding foolish, as you put it, if you think 65bn euro debt is meaningless. The very fact that it’s there & not reducing despite assets is what the market focuses on hence the poor SP. It’s really rather simple.
Time to draw a line under this one guys or this board will become like the LLOY one. Also, for the sake of some brevity I sadly laugh very loudly at my football team (play in blue, spent over a billion £’s on players) bloody Americans!!!
