I agree, buy them, keep them, forget about them, automatically re-invest the dividends & in about eight years time or sooner they will be free.
Hello fellow PSN posters & holders from the glorious Quantocks. I am an avid reader of house builder chats like there are here so thank you all for taking the time to post & share wisdom.
Making a quick buck with HB shares I think is a true gamble in the current environment, one has to delve deeper to obtain a true regard as to get the full picture. It’s really a companies balance sheet which gives an accurate position not the profit & loss number quotes, some may well disagree with this but ce la vie.
This is where buybacks come into play & what dividends have recently been paid & are forecast to be paid. In order to get a truer understanding of this one needs to know the number of shares in existence.
So what I hear you say, well I have spent a few hours deliberating & this years ISA allowance for myself & Mrs G looks like heading towards BWY, RDW & a little on TW, to join up with my PSN holdings.
I thought of adding to my LGEN but I see more upside in HB shares in the next 3 to 5 years.
Good luck all & thanks for indulging me.
The three most wealthy individuals that I know personally (one is a stockbroker) all don't hold any individual shares whatsoever. They all hold funds as part of larger portfolios & all are millionaires (Rodney).
Why I hear you cry? You are spreading risk & it certainly works for some.
If you say want to buy housebuilder stocks why buy individual shares when you can buy a fund covering the entire sector, same for pharma's, banks etc etc.
This really is a pathetic & childish board, reading back here there is only squabbling about meaningless, insulting posts.
Nothing is ever posted of any interest to an investor so I'm off, good riddance I hear you all say.
Rob, in reply.
My LGEN are income paying as are all my individual shares & my funds are Acc. I’m 64 years old now so my circumstances are different to a lot of others. I’ve invested for a number of years & done well so I’m taking some dosh to spend as I wish. My experience tells me that the most important things are pensions, indexed link if possible & inflation. No point in having a pension if inflation reduces the value of your pot so invest with this in mind.
Having said that I'm also very content with holding LGEN shares of which I have 12K invested & I get over 1K in dividends annually. So, in about 8 years with dividends invested these will have paid for themselves.
LGEN are in my opinion to be treated as a dividend payer only, if you want an increase in your capital as well as good dividends I would look elsewhere.
Zac, Rob - Thanks for your insightful posts & I agree that funds are a safer bet than individual shares for obvious reasons, don't mention Northern Rock!!
Of course fund & holding charges levied are an importance, I used to have lot invested with Vanguard who have very small fees but I found that the performance was sadly lacking. Worthy of a look is Blue Whale Acc, of which Peter Hargreaves (ex Hargreaves Lansdown) is a major investor & chairman I think.
The last 5 years performance of BW has been +20.43% / +13.77% / +23.26% / - 21.17% ( a bad year for most) / +16.42%.
A very successful investor & ex colleague of mine is a friend of PH & he recommended Blue Whale to me on its inception, the charges need to be considered though but overall I'm happy with this one.
Thanks for posting this Armani.
It will be interesting to see if PSN will announce a dividend on 10th August. As I recall from the April results the BOD didn't announce a clear dividend policy going forward. I'm happy to be corrected though & will be even happier if they pay something.
Do not underestimate Blackrock increasing their shareholding in Vodafone, this is a positive sign.
They would have had many highly respected, experienced people doing due diligence etc before they committed many millions of client funds to this purchase.
Blackrocks people are, I suspect almost as well thought of & intelligent as Gutter & Jax ... NOT, ha! (Only a joke fellas)
Danielh - By not filtering me does that mean I don't annoy you, never my intention.
Yes, I did have a buy order running for a week or so a while back at 68.1p if I recall, it almost got there when it briefly hit 69.7.
I know we are only talking pennies here & it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things but in my humble VOD is heading in the right direction to a certain extent so I'm happy to pay a little more (haven't brought yet though)
I especially like that debt is being reduced albeit funded by sales, at least there seems to be a realisation that this topic is one the markets have high on their "don't like list". The focusing on the business division is also encouraging news.
All the wages being saved over the next three years & the increases in charges will have an effect in the near future so these are a buy for me.
Let’s try to get back to some sanity on here please, simply filter out those posters that annoy you.
Trading update - received well so a nice rise yesterday, forgive me for stating the obvious. The market obviously likes the revenue increase, good UK & Africa results etc. Once the dust settles the market won’t like that overseas revenue continues to decline, particularly Italy & Germany so expect a re-trace in the immediate future.
Free cash flow before yesterday covered the dividend so this is now more secure & at about 10.5% yield as we stand today it is a good share for divi collectors. I’ve said for some time that VOD just needs to be thought of as a utility paying share, even more so now I humbly suggest.
I shall be buying back soon (sold £20k last year at av £1.36) as at my time of life I’m a divi collector. Good luck to all old & new holders.
Mike,
Stevebt keeps referring to others here as "idiots" if they don't do as he does.
It's a bit silly Steve calling others this, makes you look a bit like a; well an idiot.
So I think results are due 10th August which is approaching fast.
What do posters think of the chance that PSN will announce that they will pay a dividend or will they play it safe?
I agree Ant, my car insurance quote for renewal is up £102 this year. I usually just go onto a comparison site but having checked them all none could or rather would beat the renewal price. This is the first time ever this has happened to me & I'm nearly old enough to take a state pension. I won't be selling my AV or my LGEN shares anytime soon.
Rob - I've just fixed my gas & electricity for twelve months at £89 per month with e-On, last year we were talking double that. So, as far as inflation for the power sector goes I would say things are obviously getting better, wish I could say the same for your VOD shares amigo.
Sid, they will be a lot cheaper when VOD announces what most people who research thoroughly know, that they are continuing to lose customers in Germany at an alarming rate. Be cautious all you who keep spouting on about “no brainers” etc.
Ever wish we all had access to a bit of hindsight?
VOD’s SP down 62% & BT down 47% over the last five years.
TESLA up 1,192% & COCA COLA up 363% over the same period & many other American companies have done even better.
Perhaps Porsche has a point.
It gives me no pleasure to say this bit I'm afraid that I tend to agree with Porsche about the state of the UK economy going forward.
So much so that this week I have sold two of staple funds which are heavily invested over here, Vanguard 80% & 100% Lifestrategy funds. Now what to do with £70K + (Ideas on a postcard, as they used to say on Blue Peter I think)
7% is the figure that JP Morgan think the BOE base rate will peak at, also that the UK economy is heading for a very hard landing. But VOD is sheltered from this I hear you cry & yes they may be to a certain extent. However, even if VOD is not impacted directly, they may still experience second-hand effects due to the increased price of energy & of goods from suppliers. This could well push inflation even higher, further eroding sales. Whatever is happening out there it's not good news in the short term. Anyone expecting a quick profit here had better think again.
