“Politicians and many, many countries have found their voice, decisions are being made and actions taken. Support for Ukraine is widespread, people want to distance themselves from Russia and become more self-sufficient. We need to wean ourselves off Russian oil, gas and raw materials as much as possible”
And their voice is that of idiots who created the dire energy situation we are currently in. In order to have secured a more secure oil and gas supply it needed political decisions to be made well over a decade ago.
Western leaders have made Europe acutely dependent on Russian oil and gas by their energy decisions over the last twenty years. A mixed energy policy involving nuclear energy, tax incentives to further develop oil and gas reserves in Western Europe, greater connection to more expensive Middle East gas, greater gas storage and LPG backup were ignored so they could virtue signal about the “Green Future”.
Now they are trying to take virtue for banning Russian oil and gas when it is too late and where the consequence might be $200 barrel oil, terrible stagflation and a call on gas futures contracts that might cripple the financial gas markets.
And where has the defence spending in Europe been over the last thirty years to account for this quite predictable threat? Much of Europe now has quite laughable defence capability. Why wasn’t proper defence preparations made in Ukraine five years ago? Why the desperate attempt to get weapons in now just as supply routes in are being closed by the Russians?
The political class that caused this situation to be so acutely damaging are now claiming to be the saviours. The sight of people in Western Europe patting themselves on the back about ‘unity’ is quite nauseating.
Will the political class in Sweden now get through their thick skulls the importance of geostrategic supplies of hard commodities? Will they now see the greater importance of Swedens mining industry? History says not.
