How does 40°c, even on black tarmac melt the runway? How do countries that ALWAYS have that high temps manage? India, Qatar, UAE, Iraq and any Mid-West US State. FFS.

The UK has some the worst transport infrastructure I have ever known, melting roads, buckling rail lines, tyres that are not round enough, uneven pavements, my God what a calamity.

It's the airports that are the cause of these delays and cancellations.
So, for context, wife and kids flew out of Zurich to Chicago yesterday, went through check-in, security and passport control in about 30 mins.
Got to the other side and normally with blue passports you hook a left and then through in about 20-30 mins, depending if TSA has had a bad day or not.
Not now, no, they had to hook a right and follow the yellow brick road... waited for 2 solid hours to get to passport control, inching their way forward, then 15 mins and out into the killing fields they call the USA.
Wife said must have been 50 plane loads of passengers all together. They 'new and improved' system. She said it was never this bad, ever.
The airports need to do better, they are literally putting people off flying, which in turn will put them out of a job too.

The problem is not so much management, more of unclear signals from governments, all around. Imagine you bring staffing levels to full 100%, then, come November governments say "lock Down", what do you do? Fire half the work force and then compensate them too?
Uncertainty is driving this. If just one major government comes out and says, that they will never lockdown because of Covid, then others may follow.
Except NZ and OZ, as they seem to have major bedwetter issues from their leaders.

I think LHR should be penalised for not getting to grips with the surge and any compensations should come out of their pockets.

Potty, what you picked up on about the rise of the plague infections, this was higher in this time last year and the same as when covid was full blown in 2020 with no real timeline for a vaccine. We are fighting a different beast right now.
