Inpex Corporation Japan commits to opening a branch in Timor-Leste. • 2024/04/07

April 7, 2024 (TATOLI) - The Timor-Leste Ambassador to Japan, Ildío Ximenes da Costa, has informed that the Japanese Inpex Corporation is ready to expand its operations in Timor-Leste this year to advance the oil and gas sector. "I have met with them, and I am confident that they will start their investment in Timor-Leste this year. They are a company involved in the oil and gas sector," explained Ambassador Ilidio to Tatoli online. He further explained that on April 4, 2024, they met with Hitoshi Okawa, Senior Executive Managing Director, Sugawara Takuya, Vice President of the Main Office Director, and Yosuke Ueda, Vice President of Oceania Project Division from INPEX Corporation Japan who shared ideas and experiences as well.

As a result of their last meeting in Timor-Leste. "The Embassy of the RDTL in Japan proudly introduces Hitoshi Okawa, who will visit Timor-Leste to open INPEX Corporation's office and branch in the near future," he said. INPEX itself is Japan's largest oil and gas exploration and production company, has expressed interest in investing in the oil and gas sector in Timor-Leste. Previously in December 2023, Inpex Representative had also met with Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão at the Hotel Okura Tokyo in the capital of Japan. INPEX Corporation is a Japanese company with extensive experience in developing the oil industry in Japan, with investments in the energy sector in several countries. At the meeting, INPEX's President of INPEX Corporation, Takayuki Veda, expressed his gratitude and honor for meeting with Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão and his team as well as the opportunity to discuss potential investments in Timor-Leste. Mahakarya Geo Survey Sets in Motion Metinaro Survey Campaign with Promising Progress in Onshore Geotechnical Drilling

Geo Survey (MGS) has achieved notable milestones in the eagerly awaited Metinaro Survey Campaign, embarking on an extraordinary journey by commencing the first drilling for onshore geotechnical survey on Friday, June 9, 2023, in the Metinaro region.

Following the successful completion of the Topographic Survey, #MGS seamlessly transitioned into the next phase of the campaign, diligently carrying out the Onshore Geotechnical Survey. Simultaneously, MGS has been actively engaged in three other Scope of Work components, namely Offshore Geotechnical Survey, Site Geophysical Survey, and Metocean Survey.

Supervising the inaugural drilling operations is Clementino Pereira, the esteemed Project Manager of Timor Gap, who is accompanied by a dedicated and proficient Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) team from Timor Gap. Placing the importance on safety, health, and environmental considerations within the drilling area, MGS committed to safeguarding the well-being of personnel and minimizing any potential impact on the surrounding environment.

The comprehensive campaign encompasses the rigorous execution of a total of 45 survey points, involving a diversed array of cutting-edge techniques such as Onshore Drilling (Soil Sampling), CPTu (Cone Penetration Test), and Test Pit methodologies. These selected survey points are poised to provide invaluable geotechnical data for in-depth analysis and evaluation, specifically in relation to the upcoming LNG Terminal project of Timor Gap in Metinaro.

These subsequent stages will harness advanced methodologies and techniques to further augment the understanding of the area's intricate subsurface characteristics, thereby fortifying the knowledge base for future decision-making processes.

Kudos to MGS Party Chief and his team on the beach worksite for a very professional job with fabrication and testing. This is one of two floaters deployed to acquire geotechnical data for a jetty FEED. Facilities on deck include borehole drill rig, downhole seismic equipment and #CPTu. MGS are currently conducting a survey campaign for TIMOR GAP which also includes acquisition of nearshore #geophysical, bathy, #metocean, onshore geophysical, onshore #geotechnical and #topography data. Appreciation goes to MGS project and engineering management team, Yanes David and Erikson Franky Sormin for successfully progressing the extensive works at the Metinaro sites. And excellent support from TIMOR GAP, E.P. PM Clementino Pereira and his team with the activities not least organising direct engagement of the local community in the work.

It is truly remarkable that petroleum engineering is so popular in Timor Leste, when in the West it is declining in popularity due to government’s “net zero” push. The popularity in Timor Leste must be based on high societal expectations that the Greater Sunrise gas resource now owned by the people of Timor Leste will one day offer lots of opportunities to petroleum engineers. This remains to be seen. Maybe China can invest in Xanana’s dream of onshore LNG because in this age of climate alarmism maybe funds are drying up for new fossil fuel projects. It is difficult to understand why Timor Leste became a signatory to the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty idea when so many young students pin their hopes in a career in petroleum engineering -

DILI, 8 April 2024 (TATOLI) - Representative of Australia for Greater Sunrise, Steve Bracks informed that both the Governments of Australia and Timor-Leste have started an economic concept study for the Greater Sunrise project. Steve Bracks conveyed this after meeting with Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão to discuss the continuation of the Greater Sunrise project, accompanied directly by the Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources (MPRM, Francisco da Costa Monteiro). "The study has already started last week and it is expected to end this year so that we know what the result is like and what should be done in the next process," he emphasized. Wood is an international engineering company with a focus on the oil and gas sector. The company operates in more than 60 countries, employs around 55,000 people, with revenue of over $10 billion. Wood previously operated as Wood Group PSN, Wood Group Kenny Australia, and Wood Group Intearitv Manaaement.

The Ambassador of Brunei Darussalam in Timor-Leste, Wan Hadfi Latif, met with Prime Minister (PM) Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão to update them on the support Brunei will provide to Timor-Leste. "The purpose of this meeting is to recount the return visit from the President of Timor-Leste to Brunei, which took place last November and identified three important sectors for cooperation, such as health, oil and gas, and education," said Ambassador Brunei Wan Hadfi Latif after meeting PM Xanana at the Government Palace.

Brunei Darussalam wants to cooperate with Timor-Leste in developing the education and petroleum sectors. There have been ongoing technical discussions between Brunei and Timor-Leste to realize this plan. "The technical discussions between Brunei and Timor-Leste are ongoing, concerning what Timor-Leste needs in this cooperation. But in bilateral relations, the relationship between the two nations is going well, especially the relationship between our traditional ruler and Prime Minister Xanana," said the diplomat. The Prime Minister promised to coordinate with the ministries to discuss this matter soon. Brunei is waiting for the technical team, especially those who will go to Brunei for further discussions.
