Chinese naval task unit pays goodwill visit to Timor-Leste. 2024-06-04

During the visit, the Chinese commanding officer visited the commander of Timor-Leste’s navy and the defense minister, and also attend a welcome luncheon organized by the navy of Timor-Leste. Chinese navy personnel visited Timor-Leste navy’s military facilities and research institutes.

Why do you continually hark back to previous years? They were elected. Hugely popular with the Timor Leste population and are bringing real change to the country. A stable democracy from a country torn apart by war. I don’t endlessly worry about the TL economy nor get angry with their politicians. I’m concerned about my investment only. It’s looking very positive with their strategy on Greater Sunrise and their support for Chuditch is company saving. Good enough for Andy Butler and me. Relax.

Looks like Horta may have pulled off a brilliant deal by standing strong and cleverly playing the China card. The art of negotiation writ large. Australia seem a little desperate with an aggressive China possibly in their backyard. The landscape is about to change.

OK. That’s the Australian version. Not much going on from the TL media. Maybe it will come.

Until we hear more and not from just one outlet. I would be very very sceptical about any deal on Greater Sunrise. Keeping my fingers crossed this is a breakthrough but not holding my breath. Need to hear from TL.

If TL accepts this fast tracking deal, then relatively quickly the country becomes a major gas hub for the Asian market. Chuditch bang in the middle of this new economy. Still, have to get past the pipeline to Darwin. Huge U turn required and the concept study hardly begun. TL media ignoring the story but the fact that it’s out there suggests an agreement might be very close.

Someone posted this on ADVFN about a month ago. Maybe not all rumours on BBs should be so easily dismissed.

The offer includes a dedicated infrastructure fund, financed by Australia’s share of the gas revenues, and an acceleration of the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) program that would see more Timorese come to Australia for work and training.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong’s handpicked negotiator, former Victorian premier Steve Bracks, confirmed a “significant offer” had been made.

“It shows the determination of the Australian government to get this project up because we believe it’s in the best interests of Timor-Leste and its people for this project to proceed,” Bracks said.

Horta under pressure to accept this deal.

Today, Minister Francisco da Costa Monteiro held a meeting with Mr. Kevin Gallagher, CEO of Santos. They were joined by Mr. Gualdino da Silva, President of the National Petroleum Authority (ANP), and Mr. Rui Soares, President & CEO of TIMOR GAP, E.P.

Santos, as the operator of the Bayu Undan field and the largest investor in Timor-Leste, engaged in discussions that focused on Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) initiatives and Production Sharing Contract (PSC) at Bayu Undan.

During the meeting, the Minister expressed satisfaction with the innovative ideas presented on CCS, noting the significance of the Bayu Undan CCS development. Mr. Gallagher, highlighted that the field is recognized as a world class reservoir for CCS implementation. Furthermore, discussions covered the declining production at Bayu Undan and explored strategies to extend its production, including the potential involvement of TIMOR GAP in the joint venture.

Minister Monteiro highlighted Timor-Leste's support of any initiatives to maximize the full extraction of Bayu Undan's resources, including continuation of production and expecting that TIMOR GAP as the national oil company of Timor-Leste is involved in the process.

Japanese back Woodside with $1 billion loan for giant gas project in Australia. May 30, 2024

Australian energy giant Woodside has signed a $1 billion loan agreement with the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) to fund its giant gas project off the coast of Western Australia.

The agreement follows a memorandum of understanding (MoU) the two partners signed in November 2022 aimed at securing a stable supply of energy for Japan and to assist in achieving its decarbonization goals.

“Investment in new Australian LNG supply, like Scarborough, can help Japanese customers meet their energy security needs while also supporting regional decarbonisation goals.”

The Scarborough Energy Project, located 375 kilometers off the Pilbara coast in the Carnarvon Basin, is on schedule for first LNG cargo in 2026.
