Shell have zero refining assets in the UK so are at the mercy of others - this will prove to be a big issue for them in a UK context. Those with UK refining assets are in a prime position to adjust their operations and embrace renewable fuels.
Watch for the UK refiners with emerging economy backing, such as China and India. Their growth is less affected when compared to their US/EU based peers and therefore have real money to spend on the energy transition.

I wouldn’t say it’s a simple as ‘bolting it on’ but any good gasification system can theoretically be used to produce fuels. The problem is with fuel synthesis is that it’s very expensive equipment hence you need large gasifiers. The EQT unit is too small, and would get expensive if you had to have several lined up.

Anyone heard of these guys? Do they have a relationship with VLS?

Hydrogen has is place in aviation, but not yet. We'll need to completely retrofit airports to handle it and that'll only start once an aircraft is certified. Assuming you have proven the concept, certification takes 7-10 years and airport changes could take around the same. There there is the overlap as one transitions from JEt fuel to hydrogen. So that gives VLS until 2040 before H2 has any impact on demand.
Also, if you threw a lit match into a barrel of jet fuel, it would extinguish. Try that with Hydrogen. This is the main challenge.

Co2 to Fuel, Power to Liquids - just two of a basket of methods being studied to produce SAF. FT processes are needed for these.
VLS just needs one announcement on such a third party project and it'll do them very well and take a little bit of heat off.

I'm waiting for the Shell replacement for AltAlto. It'll come.

Very comprehensive planning and suggests they are sniffing around the UK for opportunities.

I think its fair to say that what VLS is doing in the UK is essentially replicating what Fulcrum have been working on for years in the US. Same feedstock, same tech suppliers (apart from the FT), same end product. Good point about links to the UK through BP. You could argue Fulcrum is just as British as VLS in terms of technology.

If and when there is, id be curious see to how the markets react - a drop in the sp due to VLS no longer having prime time Gov support, or a bump in the sp due to increased industry commitments (underpinning VLS decision to develop a project in the UK). What do you think?

You've just described Shell to a tee. Good job.

BA wouldn't provide technical help as they are an airline, not a fuel producer. Shell may have offered some guidance at best.
Both parties did provide some development funding, alongside the Gov.

Bit of a difference in market readiness between Gevo and VLS. Gevo have an operating plant and are looking to expand. They also have executed off take agreements. VLS have neither.
However, it shows the potential of the VLS sp should news move in favour pf VLS.

The very fact that the UK transport minister is speaking at this event, tells me that the UK is taking this seriously. That in itself is a positive.

financing and an interest in the product. Assuming the price is right, entering this project at such a stage could be a good opportunity for another oil company. Again, from what I hear around the patch, Shell's exit was just due to conflicting interests and not the project itself. Clearly, there is still a long list of technical issues to iron out (you know my stance on that), but could be a good punt for someone looking to get involved with little effort needed.
