I think that's a little unfair Monteacute. It wasn't long ago that Alastair Cook was showing us all how to be a successful English opening batsman down under, and I think he would fit very well into Spiritefan's analogy. I'm certainly old enough to remember the wallopings of the late 80's and all through the 90's and early 00's.
Stokes is a magician, though his and McCullum's faith in Crawley has been misplaced as every man and his dog will tell you. Stokes' aim is to entertain, and having been to a few tests to see him up close, he certainly does that. Has it rejuvenated interest in Test cricket? I think so. Do they need to be a bit more flexible in their approach? Yes. England and Brook threw away the nailed on series victory against India in the Summer and capitulated when in a commanding position in the first Ashes Test. There is an element of live by the sword, die by the sword, but they do seem to get the balance wrong sometimes. Anyway, personally I would much prefer to watch Stokes and co than Boycott take two days to score under a hundred runs in a draw. Lets hope Crawley proves us all wrong at the Gabba.
As for Makngo, as long as we get the double-hundred, I don't care how we make it.
