The purpose of the trial trenches are to cost effectively determine the position of quartz veins, which may contain gold to some degree. As a site investigation, then it is normal practice to reinstate the trench following sampling, documenting and survey.
With respect to spoil from mining operations, then it is a significant planning hurdle. The fact that there exist slate spoil in nearby areas is not an indication that there will be little objection to resumption of tipping, on site or traffic movements for off site disposal. There being past mining operations on site, then I am unsure as yet what additional consents if any would be required.
When compared to Power stations, tourism etc then the mining operation would produce little employment . Revenues from gold mining does not find its way to either the Welsh government nor the local government other than in the form of business rates. As such, be realistic in terms of the local political motivation for support.
