RE: The Lib Dems claim that the Windfall Profits tax isn't affecting the UKCS, but......28 Sep 2025 11:43
Just to add a little bit of optimism to the doom and gloom about the country, and time we are living in...
The UK definitely isn't without its problems - NHS, leadership, housing and so on. But there are billions of people born into war-torn or impoverished societies so as Brits we've got it pretty good. There may be some countries with better standards of living, but there are certainly a lot more with worse. We've got some of the best beaches on earth in Cornwall, Gower, Pembrokeshire etc. Great mountains in Lake District, Snowdonia, Highlands. Cities with amazing historic architecture, and centuries old country pubs serving the best ale in the world IMHO. So I don't think it's all doom and gloom.
In terms of the times we live in. I would respectfully guess that I may be in the younger demographic of this board because I'm not old enough to remember the 90's let alone 60's lol. A lot of people think society peaked in the 90's and I can understand why. Personally the 60's always appealed to me as an era. Even though I wasn't there it's hard to argue times are better now than then.
But if you look a bit further back, I'd say we have it a lot better than the poor folks fighting in WW2 and hiding from the Blitz. Going back a few more years Spanish flu was wiping out most of the people who were fortunate enough to survive the horrors of WW1. Then basically any point in history before then you were either born into an upper class, or working in conditions that would be described as slavery in today's age.
So on balance, I don't think the UK in 2025 is quite the post-apocalyptic Orwellian dystopia that a few hours doom-scrolling on the internet might have you believe. Apologies for the off-topic tangent, but the board was getting a bit too depressing. Don't forget this time next year, we'll all be millionaires 😂
