IMO there is absolutely nothing wrong with this excellent dividend payer, they even carried on paying divs in the middle of Boris Johnsons covid panic unlike many others but some will have forgotten that. Just think, when the covid panic was going full blast you could have bought these for £1.60 or thereabouts because they were being sold by many who thought the end of the world was about to start. I did not have any spare cash at the time unfortunately. Interestingly, covid is still doing the rounds but the politicians have forgotten about it.
Hey Johnycl, I can still recall when I was a trustee (and accountant) of quite a large pension scheme. Until I arrived, the trustees had been using "an active fund manager" and of course paying for him. It did not take me long to realise that his performance was failing to beat the FT all share, I successfully persuaded the other trustees to sack him and put the money with a couple of tracker funds, one of them being L & G at the time and we started to do a lot better.
So called capital growth in shares like this is defined by some people as an increase in the SP. However, that is caused by not quite logical behaviour by the average joe investor and tom foolery by so called investment professionals aided and abetted by market makers. Real capital growth is caused by directors using generated cash to invest in assets which they hope will provide further profits and that is an entirely different matter.
It fascinates me that folk are always looking for a higher share price when as an investor I am really only interested in a good return. If one decides to save in a building society or a bank surely it's the interest rate which is usually the decider; you have no expectation of getting out more than you put in if and when you decide to take your money out. So with a regular and quite good dividend payer like L & G why do folk also have some expectation getting a capital gain. I certainly don't because there are not many places you can the sort of return that L & G pays these days.
A little glance at the EPS numbers available on this page shows that only a couple of years ago it was 30% less than it was last year and before that, it has fluctuated some. There are not many large businesses where the EPS is in what one might call in a steady state; similar fluctuations occurred in the large engineering company where I was formerly employed. These things do not usually frighten the horses very much so what game is Citi playing, I wouldn't trust them further than I could fling a piano.
IN my opinion this all began when that fool Gordon Brown decided to withdraw relief from dividend tax from the pension funds because he thought that some were too rich. Lacking a decent financial education he did not understand that it was only a temporary situation and would certainly change in the long term, which of course it did. Although the Tories had the chance to rectify the matter, they never did, in their case lacking the forethought that increasing ages to death would cost them dear as is now beginning to occur. Most politicians are of course short term thinkers in this country and it is now too late to start a decent pensions policy so they will have to suffer the panic attacks about how to cater for the aging population.
I would not call 1.6% a large drop, we are still well clear of the silliness that was going on a few months ago for no apparent reason. There are always so called day traders who like to congratulate themselves for making a few pennies per share in a few weeks and there are always those who get their knickers in a twist over international events which make no difference to LGEN's results but it makes them feel safe to have some ready cash so they sell. As usual I remain unconcerned by their illogical activities and suggest you do the same.
Having actually taken part in the "research" myself this morning, I reckon they might offer a ten percent discount in order to ensure success. However in stock market terms it's a long way to June and we need to see the latest results due in a couple of weeks.
