Amazing amount of ignorant and ill-inforned garbage being posted on here. It does not seem to enter some heads that insurance is unlike any other business and is known to have a rough time occasionally irrespective of management ability. That is why the Lloyds system of rich "names" exists - so that underwriters know that there is a large pile of wealth to rely upon when disaster strikes as it surely will from time to time.
What does "poorly run" mean? As a former exec of a large engineering business, I have heard it many times but never heard it explained. I suspect that it is a catch phrase used by the ignorant to explain the occasional bad times which nearly all businesses experience.
I said it was too high dint I. Trouble is folk get carried away when some amateur pundit in a newspaper opens the gob I bet he made a few bob tho'
Far too high now, I will wait until after ex div before dipping a toe.
It's not that difficult for a new boss to turn around a long established business if he knows what he is doing, especially a business which has done well in the recent past. There have been plenty of examples in history of precisely that and CVB has gven us one. If AGEAS really want this valuable business they had better stop p***ing in the wind and make a serious bid or butt out.
'course as a retired accoountant I can tell you that there is a lot of mumbo jumbo dreamed up by my profession which is beyond the easy comprehension of the man in the street. IFRS17 is a typical example to which my litmus test has not been applied and it should be thrown out. My "litmus test" is simply this:- Can the man i the street understand it quickly and easily? I mean if you have taken cash for a contract which will not ordinarily be returned, that cash is yours to do whatever you like with. Oh but such and such an adverse event might occur in the future. Yes but it might not or it might be delayed for many many years, who's to say. OK I with my past experience will decide what reserves to keep without some accountant who doesn't know my business trying to create a complex formula to make me do so.
Skid, my friend you will never understand this business; even I as a retired accountant do not, it's too complicated. However, they have been around for 150 years and keep paying juicy dividends which is what really matters.
