Someone posted here recently that BP had nil net value for Rosneft on their B/S. Today's RNS differs to that with a potential $25b+ write off. The UK Govt should compensate BP for this with confiscated Russian assets in UK.

Akhtar, If this situation goes much further, BP won't have a Rosneft stake to sell as it'll be nationalised, that's why Western cos luke BP should be compensated from similarly nationalised Russian assets. That is the fair way to deal with such a situation

Being invested in Russia is distinct from Putin, etc... Ordinary Russians work in these Western subsidiaries based in Russia, they are commercial entities. If Russia through Putin/Medvedev's actions nationalises such Commercial assets in a tit for tat with the West, then affected Western cos should be compensated prorata with the seized Russian assets. These actions by the West or Russia are not the fault of BP, SHEL, etc.., and effectively indirectly we shareholders are being robbed by the actions of our politicians.

Putin won't last too much longer, he's gone a step too far the stupid man. Even the Russian troops are wavering amid Ukraine resistance and reluctance to fight their 'brothers', Turkey limiting Russian navy movements, sports and other bodies ostracising Russia, UN expulsion of Russia en route.....Coup in Russia ??

From what I've read, Putin looks to sanction State owned assets rather than private shareholder owned company assets, but never can fully know in these situations. However, if he did start grabbing assets rather than freezing them, then a tit for tat would ensue and I believe Western cos would be compensated from those assets, but who knows !!

But Terraplane, the West can also simply confiscate Russian assets held in UK, USA, Europe, etc ..and give their value to the lukes of BP, etc..., if Russia confiscates eg BP's Rosneft stake. Not sure where the law sits on this, but if someone owes and won't pay me £100 and I 'find' £100 in that person's easily accessible office desk, then well.......!! And the situation now is War !!

But Gary, surely there's enough Russian wealth in UK to compensate BP for its Rosneft stake if its stolen by Russia ? That would be the logical way to deal with Russia-located corporate losses because there's higher value of Russian assets outside Russia than Western value within Russia.

Goodness Porsche, I'm also annoyed at PHNX sp drop, but it will recover and remember it's very much an income share though a few Analyst Ratings have c £8 targets. You forgot ITV in your post, that's one dog I hold that really needs a serious kick but that female running it just won't leave !!

Gary59, surely Rosneft and related suppliers, etc..., can change banks to those not on, or likely not to be on, Western sanction lists ?

Thanks Markgo, although having 14% of my portfolio in BP, I'm willing to buy more if it drops enough but no definite price at mo as depends on rest of market.

Hi Markgo, interesting post. Does anyone know if BP could be restricted from receiving its 19.75% worth of Rosneft profits if oil and gas sanctions are imposed on Russia ? Indeed, could BP lose its stake altogether ? Though an equal value of Russian assets held in the UK should be given to BP if the latter took place. Any views appreciated as the BP sp falls daily !!

CCC, read last week's RNS and, in fairness, this company has serious potential given all the projects it's involved in and its low market value.
