Antelope, there have been ‘flu camps’ for most of the last century, where healthy volunteers are infected to study the effects of disease. Much of what we know about corona viruses comes from the Salisbury cold clinic, a former Red Cross hospital where volunteers would stay and ‘catch a cold’. There is of course no cure either for colds or flu, tens of thousands of people die of the latter each year. A ‘flu camp’ for otherwise healthy volunteers has never seemed unethical, given the advances that have been achieved through that study.

The news that is not in the RNS, but in the papers, that, pending final approvals, HVivo will be contracted to carry out challenge studies with hospitals - at the Royal Free and in Newcastle is potentially huge. It essentially suggests that in partnership with govt and NHS this company will, alone in the world, take the lead in the most important clinical trials in any of our lifetimes. Dyor

Post Brexit UKGov will be desperate (and able) to invest In and hand contracts to key sector companies to achieve these strategic goals, not least to find a vaccine for Covid but also to advance data collection and resource around virology, infection and wearables. No company is better placed to take advantage of such contracts imho

The key thing is the protocol to test Covid against however many vaccines is clearly complete and v close to approval. No one else in the world has that capacity. Shows again that investing is about patience, and, in Cathal Friel's case, seizing the day. CF knew what he was buying here, the pandemic has proved him correct, but the underlying value was not in doubt.
